Before You Start

DOOM + DOOM II has 33 achievements worth 1,000 Gamerscore. It's a new list, separate from the old 2019 DOOM (1993) and DOOM II (Classic) lists. Nothing from those older apps carries over, and old saves don't work in this version.

  • Online: none. No achievement needs multiplayer or co-op. Achievements are reported not to unlock in online co-op at all, so do everything in single player.
  • Missables: none. Every achievement is either a single-level task or a cumulative counter, and every map can be replayed from Level Select at any time.
  • Playthroughs: none required. The eight "Reach the end" achievements only check that you finish each campaign's final map. Level-selecting straight to that map works.
  • Difficulty requirements: one level on Nightmare, and two achievements on Ultra-Violence or higher. Clean Slate needs Hurt Me Plenty or higher. Everything else works on any difficulty.
  • SIGIL II: added in April 2025, and it has no achievements. Don't play it for completion.
  • Mods: add-ons from the in-game mod browser don't count. Always launch the official campaign entries from the main menu.

Cheats and Modifiers Are Allowed

Cheats don't disable achievements in this release, so this guide uses them where they save real time.

Turning cheats on. Since Update 1 (October 3, 2024), you can switch cheats on with a controller from the pause menu: pause, choose Cheats, then pick a cheat. The menu closes after each pick, so reopen it for the next one. Cheats start locked. To unlock them all at once, go to Options, then Gameplay, and choose the unlock-all-cheats option. Labels may read slightly differently on your console.

Cheats used in this guide:

  • God mode (IDDQD)
  • Give all (IDKFA): all weapons, keys and 200% armor
  • Give all, no keys (IDFA)
  • No clipping (IDCLIP)
  • Give chainsaw (IDCHOPPERS)

Level warp (IDCLEV) and the music cheat (IDMUS) do nothing from the menu. Use Level Select instead.

No clipping warning: while No clipping is on, you can't pick up items, and floor triggers you walk over don't fire. That includes timed ledges, teleporters and walk-over exits. Switches you press still work. Turn it off before you collect weapons or items, step on a teleporter or exit, or need to trigger something by walking over it.
Legacy of Rust tip: Give all gives you copies of the Incinerator and Calamity Blade that use no fuel. Some players report that kills with those copies don't count toward Kill It With Fire or Screen Wipe, while other published solutions use Give all successfully. Status: UNVERIFIED / CONFLICTING REPORTS. The safe choice is to pick up the real weapon on the map and watch the achievement tracker after your first kills.

Difficulty Modifiers. You choose these when starting a level from Level Select. The options are pistol starts, multiplayer items, fast monsters, Monsters Respawn and No Monsters.

  • No Monsters: allowed for Untouchable and More Like a Dream. It voids anything that says "monster-filled level" and any kill-based achievement.
  • Monsters Respawn: used below for Kill It With Fire.
  • Multiplayer items: leave it off for Hoarder and Burning Out of Control. It may change the item total.
If you'd rather play legitimately, every achievement can be earned without cheats. The route stays the same; you just give up the shortcuts.

Save Habits

Manual saves and quicksaves are free to use, with two exceptions:

  • Untouchable: play the eight-level run start to finish without saving or loading. Loading is reported to break the chain in some cases, and a death definitely resets it.
  • Indiscriminate Headhunter: some players get stuck at 22/23. Check the counter after each new enemy type, so you know right away if a kill didn't register.

DOOM

Episode 1 Untouchable Run

Do this first, while you're fresh. It's the only achievement with a strict chain.

Untouchable

Required: finish eight different levels in a row, each under its par time, without dying, on Ultra-Violence or higher. It unlocks when you exit the eighth qualifying level.

This is the fastest proven route:

  1. Go to Single Player, then Level Select, then DOOM, then E1M1. Choose Ultra-Violence, and turn on the No Monsters modifier before starting. The achievement doesn't say "monster-filled", and this method is confirmed to work.
  2. From here on, advance naturally by exiting each map into the next. Never go back to Level Select or the main menu mid-run.
  3. Play E1M1 and E1M2, then E1M3. Take E1M3's secret exit to E1M9.
  4. Play and finish E1M9. It returns you to E1M4.
  5. Play E1M4, E1M5, E1M6 and E1M7.

E1M8 is left out because its exit opens only when the two Barons die, and No Monsters removes them.

Par times, in run order:

  • E1M1 0:30
  • E1M2 1:15
  • E1M3 2:00
  • E1M9 2:45
  • E1M4 1:30
  • E1M5 2:45
  • E1M6 3:00
  • E1M7 3:00

Keys are still needed with No Monsters. Exit routes:

  • E1M1 Hangar (no keys): go forward and through the right-hand door into the computer room. Follow the passage to the zig-zag bridge room, cross it, and go through the door to the exit.
  • E1M2 Nuclear Plant (red key): grab the red key upstairs from the start and open the red door. Take the stairs and cross the nukage room to the lift. At the bottom, press the switch on the far wall, then take the stairs down and the small lift to the exit.
  • E1M3 Toxin Refinery (secret exit, no keys): see the steps below.
  • E1M9 Military Base (all three keys): the yellow key is up the west stairs from the courtyard, behind a fence. The red key is through the yellow door east of the courtyard; leave by the west door. The hidden switch behind the red door raises a pillar holding the blue key. To exit, take the north stairs and the blue door and drop into the canal. Ride the green-switch platform and the lift, then go through the hidden door and over the new bridge to the exit switch.
  • E1M4 Command Control (blue key; yellow key reported optional): take the center lift in the green room up to the round room with the blue key, then go through the blue door. The switch beside the yellow door raises the exit bridge, and it's reported to work without the yellow key. If it doesn't respond, grab the yellow key from the end of the gray maze first. After the switch, the west door of the blue computer room is the short way back to the exit. With a 1:30 par, skipping the yellow key saves real time.
  • E1M5 Phobos Lab (yellow and blue keys): get the yellow key via the porch walkway, go through the yellow door and up the lift, and press the platform switch. In the computer room, press the corner switch to reach the blue key. Then go through the blue door to the exit. The hidden door near the blue-key switch and the pentagram teleporter both bring you back near the start fast.
  • E1M6 Central Processing (red, blue and yellow keys): the red key is in the first room, and the blue key is on the pier behind the red doors. With the blue key, a side passage reaches the yellow key without the maze. Then press the two switches on the way and exit.
  • E1M7 Computer Station (yellow, red and blue keys): none can be skipped. Take the lift in the start alcove to the yellow key and go through the yellow door. Ride the octagon lift to the red key, then go back for the blue key on the balcony. Go through the blue door, up the staircase, and press the recessed button. That opens the gray door at the far end of the rectangular room. Go back there, through the gray door into the exit room, and press the exit switch. The button alone doesn't end the level. Hidden doors at the north and south nukage pools are shortcuts back toward the start.

E1M3 secret exit:

  1. From the start door, go left, through the next door, bear right, then up and down the stairs.
  2. Turn left and press the switch, which opens a passage.
  3. In the computer room, crossing a line in the passage lowers hidden ledges for a short time. Run right around the computers to the back ledge before it rises again.
  4. A large door opens onto the nukage river. Follow the river into the east tunnel, to a small brown room with a backpack and a switch. Press the switch to raise a bridge.
  5. Go back to the large room north of the start and cross the new bridge over the nukage pit. The gray wall rises.
  6. Walk straight down the tan passage and through the back doors into the gray passage. The secret exit switch is there.
  • Cheats: God mode and No clipping are reported not to break the chain, and you still have to beat each par. No clipping can cut corners, but turn it off for E1M3's timed ledge, for the line that lowers the ledges, and for each exit. Those only fire when you walk over them normally.
  • Tracking: the in-game achievement screen shows your progress as x/8. Check it at each intermission screen.
  • Failing: if you miss par or die, start the episode again from E1M1. Don't save during the run.

The secret exit and E1M9 also earn the next achievement.

Alternate Dimension

Required: find a secret level. Take E1M3's secret exit into E1M9. Whether arriving is enough or you have to finish E1M9 isn't documented, so finish E1M9 to be safe. It's a short map, and the Untouchable route needs it anyway.

If you skipped the Untouchable run, Level Select E1M3, take the secret exit, and finish E1M9. No Monsters makes this quick. Choosing E1M9 directly from Level Select is reported not to count.

E1M1 Hangar: The 100% Sweep

Level Select E1M1 on Ultra-Violence, with monsters on and no modifiers. This one short map covers most of the per-level achievements. Use God mode here if you like, but not Give all, which can spoil the items count.

The Only Thing They Fear Is You

Required: 100% kills without getting hurt, on Ultra-Violence or higher, in a level with monsters. It should unlock when you exit.

Status: HISTORICALLY REPORTED BUG. The current Xbox status is unverified. Players have reported clean, no-damage runs that didn't unlock. If your first exit doesn't unlock it, that doesn't mean you took damage. Use the backup trick below.

  1. Turn on God mode before you take any damage. God mode is reported to count as not getting hurt.
  2. Kill every monster, including the ones hidden behind the secret areas (see Burning Out of Control below).
  3. Exit.

Backup trick if it doesn't unlock:

  1. Replay the map on Ultra-Violence and get 100% kills.
  2. Make sure your health is at 100% or higher, then make a manual save next to the exit switch.
  3. Exit the level.
  4. As soon as the next map starts, load that save and exit again.

DOOM II MAP01 on Ultra-Violence is another good map for this. It only has a handful of zombiemen and imps.

The requirement is only 100% kills with no damage. Some players report it unlocking only after they also got 100% items and secrets on the same run. That isn't a confirmed extra requirement, but the full E1M1 sweep in this section covers it anyway. Use it if your kills-only runs keep failing.

Clean Slate

Required: kill every monster in a level with monsters, on Hurt Me Plenty or higher. It should unlock when you exit with 100% kills.

Some players report it only unlocks on Hurt Me Plenty itself, not higher difficulties. That report is unconfirmed and conflicts with the achievement's description. Only if Clean Slate didn't unlock after the Ultra-Violence sweep: Level Select E1M1 on Hurt Me Plenty, kill every monster (including the ones behind the secrets), and exit. Lost Souls don't count toward the kill total.

An Important Looking Door

Required: find one secret area. It unlocks the moment you enter one. On E1M1, the first is a discolored fake wall in the zig-zag walkway, which opens onto the outdoor courtyard with the blue Mega-Armor.

Hoarder

Required: finish a level with 100% items.

Faster option: DOOM II MAP07 Dead Simple on I'm Too Young To Die covers Hoarder, Burning Out of Control and Overprepared together. Follow the Overprepared steps, picking up every item on the lowered platforms with the Megasphere last. The map's only secret is the exit area, which you enter on the way to the switch. Open the automap stats before pressing the switch and confirm kills, items and secrets all read 100%. E1M1 below also works, and covers the other E1M1 achievements at the same time.

  • What counts: only health bonuses (small blue vials), armor bonuses (small helmets) and power-ups count toward the item percentage. Power-ups are the Soulsphere, Megasphere, Invulnerability, Berserk, Partial Invisibility, Computer Area Map and Light Amplification Visor.
  • What doesn't count: medkits, stimpacks, ammo, weapons, keys, the backpack, the radiation suit, and green or blue armor.
  • E1M1 total: 38 counted items on Ultra-Violence (25 armor bonuses and 13 health bonuses), or 37 on Hurt Me Plenty and below. None of them are power-ups, and bonuses can be picked up at any health or armor value.
  • Give all: don't use either Give all cheat on this map. Both can spoil the items count. God mode is fine.
  • Checking: quicksave before the exit and open the automap stats. You want 38/38 on Ultra-Violence, or 37/37 on lower difficulties. If you're short, check the secret 3 hallway first, then the start-room corners, before reloading.

Sweep in this order:

  1. Start room: the health and armor bonuses scattered here, including one on each side of the start.
  2. Stairs: the two health bonuses just before the stairs going down.
  3. Red-lit rooms: the armor bonuses in the red-lit room and its cubicle.
  4. Exit room: the health and armor bonuses near the exit door.
  5. Secret 3: the armor bonus hallway at the top of the hidden lift (see Burning Out of Control). If you end up one short, this is the usual miss.

Burning Out of Control

Required: 100% kills, items and secrets in one level with monsters. E1M1 has three secrets:

  1. The fake wall in the zig-zag walkway, which leads to the courtyard (see An Important Looking Door).
  2. The southeast alcove of the zig-zag toxic room. It lowers when you step into the room south of the zig-zag.
  3. A hidden lift in the corner of that alcove. Crossing the trigger line between the two light posts at the north entrance lowers it for a short time, so sprint to it. If it rises before you get there, step back over the trigger to lower it again. The top is the armor bonus hallway counted for Hoarder.

Shotgunners and imps are tucked behind these areas, and two imps sit in a tower that lowers when you enter the exit room. All of them count toward 100% kills.

Doormat

Required: crush a corpse in a door. Kill an enemy so its body falls in a doorway, then let the door close on it. It unlocks as the door closes. Any map with doors works, so do it at one of E1M1's doors while you're here.

Timing Is Everything

Required: kill two enemies with one barrel explosion. E1M1 has barrels next to pairs of zombiemen near the exit room. Wait until two are close to a barrel, then shoot it.

Groovy

Required: three multi-kills with the Shotgun. A multi-kill is reported to mean one blast killing two or more enemies, so keep going until it unlocks. Zombiemen line up well in E1M1. If you don't get all three here, keep at it in DOOM II MAP02's Super Shotgun room, where hitscanners bunch up.

Not So Friendly Fire

Required: get one enemy to kill another. It usually happens on its own. On E1M1, stand so an imp's fireball or a zombieman's shot hits another monster, then let them fight until one dies. If it doesn't happen here, it will happen naturally on almost any busier map.

E2M2 Containment Area: Berserk

Level Select E2M2 on Hurt Me Plenty or Ultra-Violence, so there are enough imps and demons to punch. A Berserk pack is just ahead and to the left of the start. Punch everything weak without switching weapons. Turn on God mode if you want to play it safe.

A Man and a Half

Required: 20 kills with the Berserk power-up active, in one level.

Guns Are For Wusses

Required: 25 Fist kills in one level. Keep punching after A Man and a Half until you've had at least 25 Fist kills on this map.

E2M8 Tower of Babel: Cyberdemon

Level Select E2M8 on Hurt Me Plenty or higher, so the Lost Souls appear. Turn on God mode, and use Give all for the BFG. There's only one Rocket Launcher, in the side room east of the start. The other side rooms hold rocket ammo and Supercharges, about 150 rockets in total.

Killing the Cyberdemon ends the map and the episode, so do Overkill first.

Overkill

Required: a BFG9000 blast that kills exactly one enemy. Fire the BFG at a single Lost Soul with nothing else nearby. If the blast kills two, try again.

Shoot It Until It Dies

Required: kill a Cyberdemon with the Pistol. Only the killing shot needs to be a Pistol shot.

  1. Soften it up with rockets, saving often.
  2. Switch to the Pistol well before it's nearly dead.
  3. If something else lands the final hit, reload.

DOOM Ending

DOOM

Required: reach the end of DOOM. Level Select E4M8 Unto the Cruel. Any difficulty works. It must be E4M8, not a secret map.

  1. Get the red key from behind the marble demon-face wall on the north side of the walkway in the lava room. Pressing the right-hand face opens it, and a Rocket Launcher waits there too. Open the north face of the central pillar and press the switch inside to raise the bridge over the lava.
  2. Take the south teleporter to the yellow key. The teleporter near the Soulsphere brings you back to the main room.
  3. Open the pillar's south face and press its switch. Stairs rise to the final area.
  4. Kill the Spider Mastermind. The central pillar then lowers and reveals the exit portal.
  5. Walk into the portal. Killing the Mastermind alone doesn't end the level.

Kill the Spider Mastermind with a normal weapon so it also counts toward Indiscriminate Headhunter.

SIGIL

Sigil

Required: reach the end of SIGIL. Level Select SIGIL's E5M8 Halls of Perdition. Any difficulty works. SIGIL II has no achievements, so don't use it.

  1. At the start, shoot the evil eye to open the door, then enter the barred cage around the start room.
  2. Go around the south side to the Chaingun. That opens a compartment in the east wall with a second evil eye. Shoot it to get the red key.
  3. Press the red satyr switch north of the start.
  4. At the southern tip of the caged path, a new alcove has a portal and the Plasma Gun. Take the portal to the big hall in the southeast.
  5. Take the stairs by the torches up to the central building, then jump across the buildings. Follow the lava ledge back into the central building, then jump to the southern building for the Rocket Launcher. Skip the alcove behind you on the ledge, which is a Baron and Cacodemon trap.
  6. Take the portal into the cage around the start pentagram. Grab the Soulsphere and ride the sinking floor down into the boss arena.
  7. Kill the Spider Mastermind, then the Cyberdemon, then the final wave of monsters.
  8. Step onto the pentagram with the evil eye in its center to finish.

No clipping shortcut (reported): use No clipping to get to the exit pentagram, turn it off, then step onto it. The exit only fires when you walk onto it with No clipping off.

DOOM II

MAP01 Entryway on Nightmare

More Like a Dream

Required: complete any level on Nightmare. Level Select DOOM II MAP01 on Nightmare and exit.

  • Safest method: turn on the No Monsters modifier and run straight to the exit. It takes under a minute.
  • Alternative: God mode is reported to work on Nightmare in this release, but this isn't confirmed on Xbox. If you play with monsters on, remember they're fast and come back to life, so don't stop to fight.

MAP01 Chainsaw Farm

Until It Is Done

Required: 100 Chainsaw kills in total. It's cumulative across sessions and campaigns, and Chainsaw kills in DOOM, SIGIL and DOOM II all count.

  1. On DOOM II MAP01, turn around at the start and go left to grab the Chainsaw. You can't get it after you leave the start area. Give chainsaw also works.
  2. Quicksave next to a group of weak enemies.
  3. Saw them down, quickload, and repeat.

After the first reload, check the achievement tracker to confirm the kills stayed counted. If the count rolled back, farm by playing forward through maps packed with weak enemies instead, such as MAP27 Monster Condo.

MAP02 Underhalls

Skeet Shooting

Required: kill four enemies with one Super Shotgun shot.

  1. Level Select MAP02 on I'm Too Young To Die, where the guards are weakest.
  2. Follow the eastern tunnel to a UAC door. Behind it is a computer room full of zombiemen and shotgun guys guarding the Super Shotgun. Quicksave before you open it.
  3. Run in without killing anything and grab the Super Shotgun.
  4. Turn around and fire into the tightest group at close range.
  5. If fewer than four die, reload and try again.

This is also a good map to finish Groovy if you still need multi-kills.

MAP03 The Gantlet: Weapon Achievements

Level Select MAP03 and turn on God mode and Give all. MAP03 has no Plasma Rifle in single player, so Give all supplies the weapons.

  • Imps: a pack waits in the room right after the start, and there's an imp closet by the red key.
  • Hitscanners: the large water area holds zombiemen, shotgunners and chaingunners.

Cookin' With Plasma

Required: kill five enemies within five seconds with the Plasma Rifle. Hold fire into the imp room right after the start.

Bowling for Gibs

Required: gib (explode) three or more enemies with one rocket blast. Weak enemies gib easily. Fire a rocket into the middle of a tight cluster of zombiemen or imps.

Heavenly Joy

Required: fire 200 Chaingun bullets in a row. Give all fills your bullets. Equip the Chaingun and hold the trigger until 200 rounds are spent, without letting go. Hits don't matter, but letting go probably resets the count.

MAP07 Dead Simple

Overprepared

Required: finish a level with 200% health and 200% armor.

  1. Level Select MAP07 on I'm Too Young To Die. That gives you 2 Mancubi and 4 Arachnotrons. Higher difficulties have more.
  2. If you want God mode, turn it on now. It resets your health to 100%, so it has to be on before you pick up the Megasphere.
  3. Kill both Mancubi. Their deaths open the walls and release the Arachnotrons.
  4. Kill all four Arachnotrons. The exit only opens once every monster is dead: the central step rises and reveals the eye switch.
  5. Hit the wall switches to lower the platforms. Pick up everything else first and leave the Megasphere for last.
  6. Take the Megasphere, then press the central eye switch without taking damage or reloading.

If the last two Arachnotrons die at nearly the same moment, the exit step can rise twice and look out of reach. Run across to it from the lowered northwest or northeast platform.

A mid-level save and reload is reported to stop it from unlocking, so do the pickup and the exit in one go. MAP32 Grosse has a hidden Megasphere and makes a backup spot.

MAP30 Icon of Sin

DOOM II

Required: reach the end of DOOM II. Level Select MAP30 and destroy the Icon of Sin. Any difficulty works.

  1. Teleport to the platforms and press the demon-face switches as you go up the steps.
  2. The top switch raises a platform in the slime. Use its side to lower the pillar, which works as a lift.
  3. Ride the lift up with the Rocket Launcher equipped. Fire while it's still rising, just before the top, when your launcher lines up with the demon's chin and the opening into the brain. About three direct hits kill it, and the level ends on its own. If you miss, ride down and try again.

The Icon throws spawn cubes. If one lands on you, it kills you even through God mode, so don't stand around once it wakes. Also don't save after waking it, then quit and reload.

A Revenant waits at the start, and the Icon's spawner brings in many enemy types. Before you finish, kill one of each type that appears, for Indiscriminate Headhunter.

The DOOM II Add-ons

All four add-ons have hard finales, and God mode makes them painless. Use the normal exit on each final map; secret maps don't count.

No Rest for the Living

No Rest for the Living

Required: reach the end of No Rest for the Living. Level Select MAP08 Tomb of Malevolence.

  1. Open the demon-face doors and press the switch behind the Rocket Launcher. The floor lowers you into the main arena. This descent is required.
  2. Head to the northern wall and follow it west to the northwest corner. Press the wall switch there.
  3. Follow the north wall east to the next corner and press the second switch. Stairs rise.
  4. Climb to the top, press the switch there, and cross the pillar platforms to the red candle teleporter.
  5. The teleporter returns you to the start. Climb the new stairs at the central pedestal to the exit.

The Cyberdemon is optional.

Master Levels for DOOM II

Master Levels

Required: reach the end of Master Levels for DOOM II. Level Select level 20, Mephisto's Mausoleum, with monsters on.

  1. Outside, find the odd-textured column on the west side. It lowers, a Revenant is inside, and stepping onto it teleports you into the main building.
  2. Clear the building: the Revenants, the Mancubi in the four wall heads (use rockets), then the Hell Knights and Arachnotrons that follow. Save the rest of your rockets for the boss.
  3. Take the red key from the pit in the northwest corner. The floor there is damaging.
  4. Leave through the red lion-head door in the southeast corner pit. In the northwest mausoleum behind the red door, kill the Revenant that rises from the pedestal and flip the switch in the opposite corner.
  5. Grab the Megaarmor in the southwest corner. That raises a big stairway on the south side.
  6. Climb the stairs and drop into the central room. The blue key's pillar lowers and four Barons teleport in. Kill them and take the blue key from the lower area.
  7. Go through the blue door on the west side of the building and ride the elevator up.
  8. Kill the Spectres standing in front of the brain on the far side first. Then keep firing rockets into the brain until it dies. Expect 15 to 20 rockets, so pick up the rocket boxes around the perimeter on the way. Its death ends the level.

Level 21, Bad Dream, is the secret map and doesn't count. Spawn cubes can kill you through God mode here too, so keep moving.

TNT: Evilution

Evilution

Required: reach the end of TNT: Evilution. Level Select MAP30 Last Call.

  1. The outdoor torch platforms have to be crossed in a set color order, and a wrong platform can kill you instantly. The order is red, green, green, blue, green, blue, green, blue, green, green, red, blue, red, blue. Turning on No clipping is the safest way across. Turn it off once you're over, so teleporters and pickups work again.
  2. Go through the north door. At the pillar in that corridor, press the switch on its east edge to raise a bridge to the south.
  3. Cross the bridge, press the switch on the far side, and head east.
  4. In the next corridor, press the switch that opens the door.
  5. In the last room, the red key sits on the center pillar with a Cyberdemon above it. Press the switch behind the Cyberdemon to raise stairs around the pillar, then climb them for the key.
  6. Take the south door and the teleporters to the boss room.
  7. Climb the curved stairs, jump from the top onto the north platform, and press the switch. A second set of stairs rises to the ledge behind the curved stairs.
  8. Climb those new stairs and stop on the step just below the top. Aim slightly below the hole in the head and fire. Any direct-fire weapon works. The brain's death ends the level, so you don't need the exit ledge.

The Plutonia Experiment

Plutonia

Required: reach the end of The Plutonia Experiment. Level Select MAP30 The Gateway of Hell.

  1. In the round starting chamber, take the backpack, then drop through the hole in the floor for the BFG.
  2. Take the one-way diamond teleporter at the south end. It leads to a heart-shaped room with a pit and a rising pillar.
  3. Stepping off the pillar releases two Arch-viles from booths. Go through the north doorway. A wall drops and opens the big arena.
  4. Kill the Cyberdemon guarding the Megasphere at the north edge of the low circular well.
  5. Drop into the well. Press the east switch once, then the west switch, which drops the central pillar into its pit.
  6. Stand on the pillar facing the demon wall to the north. As it rises, fire a rocket through the small hole in its forehead just before the pillar reaches the top. It usually takes two hits, and only rockets work. The boss's death ends the level.

If you fall into the lava, run for the tunnels southeast or southwest of the well.

Spawn cubes can kill you through God mode, so don't linger.

Legacy of Rust

Legacy of Rust has two episodes, The Vulcan Abyss (E1) and Counterfeit Eden (E2), and adds six new enemy types for Indiscriminate Headhunter.

  • First kills: kill each new type the first time with a normal weapon, such as the Shotgun or Chaingun. Incinerator and Calamity Blade kills sometimes don't count toward Headhunter.
  • New weapons: use only the copies you pick up on the map. Give all copies are reported to fail for the weapon achievements, so check the achievement tracker after your first kills.

E1M1 Scar Gate and E1M2 Sanguine Wastes

  • E1M1: Ghouls wait near the end of the map.
  • E1M2: a Banshee appears in the room with the star-shaped floor. Banshees also show up in E2M5 if you miss it here. Banshees explode when they reach you, so shoot them from a distance with a normal weapon. Then check that the Headhunter count went up.

E1M6 The Coiled City

This map has the Mindweaver, Vassago and Shocktrooper, plus real pickups of both new weapons.

  • Incinerator: a second one, with fuel cans, sits on a stair inside a secret. To reach the main one:
  1. Drop into the pit and flip the switch on the central column to lower part of the floor.
  2. Follow the passage down the spiral staircase to the skull lever at the very bottom, and pull it. Some steps lower and open a passage south.
  3. Head south through that passage, past the Megasphere. On Ultra-Violence and Nightmare it's a Supercharge instead.
  4. The Incinerator sits at the top of the steps at the end. Picking it up lowers the walls on both sides and releases Mindweavers, which are good targets for Kill It With Fire.
  • Calamity Blade: it's behind the yellow door, up a lift. The yellow key is itself inside a secret, which you reach through a chain of secrets up the stairs that ends at a skull switch.

Kill It With Fire

Required: kill 30 arachnid enemies with the Incinerator, in total. Arachnotrons, Mindweavers and the Spider Mastermind all count, and E1M6 has lots of Mindweavers.

  1. Level Select E1M6 on Ultra-Violence with the Monsters Respawn modifier on. Ultra-Violence gives you more spawns.
  2. Turn on God mode only. Don't use Give all.
  3. Pick up the real Incinerator described above. Fire once and make sure its fuel counter drops.
  4. Burn the arachnids in the spiral room, and keep burning them as they come back. They respawn about 10 to 15 seconds after dying.

Alternative: quicksave with the real Incinerator out near a group of arachnids, burn them, quickload, and repeat. The count is reported to survive reloads.

Check the x/30 progress in the achievement tracker. If it isn't rising, first make sure the Incinerator's fuel goes down when you fire. If it doesn't, you have a Give all copy, so restart the level and pick up the real one. If fuel is dropping but the count still stalls, burn a different group, or play forward without reloading.

Fallback if respawns or reloads aren't giving reliable progress, or you run out of fuel:

  1. Restart E1M6 on Hurt Me Plenty.
  2. Pick up the real Incinerator.
  3. Burn the Mindweavers it releases (about six), plus any other arachnids you meet.
  4. Check the x/30 tracker, then repeat the run. Expect around five runs.

E2M5 The Rack and E2M6 Soul Silo

  • E2M5: Ghouls and Banshees appear early. Pick up whichever ones you still need.
  • E2M6: Shocktroopers appear here, and this is the map for Screen Wipe.

Screen Wipe

Required: kill 50 enemies with one Calamity Blade shot. Level Select E2M6 Soul Silo on I'm Too Young To Die, which gives the Blade double starting fuel, and turn God mode on. Don't use Give all.

  1. Collect the keycards in order: red, then blue, then yellow. The red keycard is up the steps on the west side of the red-door room. The blue keycard is in the middle of the room past the north door, after the Mancubi and Ghoul ambush room. Four Mancubi guard the yellow keycard, and picking it up teleports you into an arena with a pit on each side.
  2. A Calamity Blade sits right in front of you, between two pedestals. Pick it up, then quicksave.
  3. Grab the fuel pickups on the way toward the pits. A full charge costs 50 fuel. The Blade starts with 20, or 40 on I'm Too Young To Die and Nightmare.
  4. Walk forward until the pits rise, carrying 100 or more imps.
  5. Back up so most of the horde is in front of you, fully charge the Calamity Blade, and fire.

Alternative pickup: on the way to the yellow key, the blue door in the middle of the I-shaped room also has a Calamity Blade and fuel cans. Use a map pickup rather than the Give all copy, whose kills are reported not to count.

Reload if other enemies thin out the imps first or the shot comes up short.

E2M7 Brink

The Tyrant, the last of the six new enemy types, is on this map, along with a Cyberdemon.

Legacy of Rust

Required: reach the end of Legacy of Rust. Finish E2M7 Brink, the final map of Counterfeit Eden. Any difficulty works.

  1. Flip the central switch and kill the Tyrant. Use a normal weapon, so it counts for Headhunter. Its death reveals four more Tyrants and a Cyberdemon.
  2. While they fight, flip the five closet switches. That turns the arena into a maze.
  3. Take either skull key. Red is at the west end of the maze and blue at the east end. You only need one, because it opens the matching door on the far side. Reaching that side lowers a staircase. Go north to the skull switch that opens the way forward.
  4. Grab the Megasphere and flip the switch to raise the warhead.
  5. Press the eye switches in the east and west silo chambers. Together they open a central chamber with a third eye switch. Press it to open the path to the launch site.
  6. At the launch site, flip the console switch. It releases a final wave of Tyrants from both sides.
  7. Once every Tyrant is dead, the console opens. Use its computer to open the portal, go through, and use the computer at the top of the steps to finish.

Indiscriminate Headhunter Cleanup

All 23 Enemy Types

Indiscriminate Headhunter

Required: kill one of each of the 23 enemy types that count. Progress is cumulative across all campaigns, and the in-game achievement tracker shows it as x/23.

Classic (17):

  • Zombieman, Shotgun Guy, Heavy Weapon Dude
  • Imp, Demon, Spectre, Lost Soul
  • Cacodemon, Hell Knight, Baron of Hell
  • Arachnotron, Pain Elemental, Revenant
  • Mancubus, Arch-vile, Spider Mastermind, Cyberdemon

Legacy of Rust (6):

  • Ghoul, Banshee, Mindweaver
  • Shocktrooper, Vassago, Tyrant

Don't count: the Wolfenstein SS soldiers in DOOM II's secret maps, Commander Keen, John Romero's head (the boss brain), and the Icon of Sin itself.

The tracker only shows a total, not which type is missing. If you're short, work through this checklist one type at a time. Kill one of each type at its anchor map and watch the count go up after each kill, so you know exactly which type didn't register.

  • Zombieman, Shotgun Guy, Imp: DOOM II MAP03.
  • Heavy Weapon Dude: DOOM II MAP03 on Hurt Me Plenty or higher, since it doesn't appear on lower difficulties. You can also use MAP27.
  • Demon: DOOM E2M2.
  • Spectre: DOOM II MAP27.
  • Lost Soul: DOOM II MAP06, or DOOM E2M8.
  • Cacodemon: DOOM II MAP08.
  • Hell Knight: DOOM II MAP06, which has them on every difficulty. MAP28 also has them.
  • Baron of Hell, Spider Mastermind: DOOM E4M8.
  • Arachnotron, Mancubus: DOOM II MAP07.
  • Pain Elemental: DOOM II MAP28.
  • Revenant: DOOM II MAP06.
  • Arch-vile: DOOM II MAP20. It also has a Spider Mastermind, Cyberdemon and Baron.
  • Cyberdemon: DOOM E2M8.
  • Ghoul: Legacy of Rust E1M1.
  • Banshee: Legacy of Rust E1M2, or E2M5.
  • Mindweaver, Vassago, Shocktrooper: Legacy of Rust E1M6.
  • Tyrant: Legacy of Rust E2M7.

DOOM II MAP30's spawner is random, so don't rely on it for any type.

Players have reported kills that failed to register, leaving the count stuck at 22/23. No official fix has been announced, and how often it happens now isn't known. Status: HISTORICALLY REPORTED BUG. Cheap safety nets:

  • Kill each type with the Shotgun or Chaingun, at least twice.
  • Check the tracker after each new type. Recovery order if you're stuck at 22/23:
  1. Kill the Spider Mastermind at DOOM E3M8 Dis with a normal weapon. It's the most often recommended fix for a stalled count.
  2. Re-kill the last type you killed before the counter stalled.
  3. Kill a Shocktrooper again with a normal weapon.
  4. Replay the other bosses: the Cyberdemon and the Tyrant.
  5. Work through the anchor checklist above, one type at a time, and watch for the kill that makes the count go up.

Troubleshooting

  • The Only Thing They Fear Is You: if it won't unlock, use the save-at-the-exit trick from the E1M1 section, or try DOOM II MAP01 on Ultra-Violence.
  • Kill It With Fire or Screen Wipe not progressing: check that the weapon's fuel goes down when you fire. If it doesn't, you're holding a Give all copy, so restart the level and pick up the map weapon. If fuel is dropping and progress still doesn't move, retry without reloading in between.
  • Reach-the-end achievements: if one doesn't unlock, check that you launched the official campaign entry rather than a mod, and that you used the final map's normal exit.
