▶Completion Overview
▶Xbox Version, Status, and Route
The Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows release uses one 55-achievement, 1,000 Gamerscore list through Smart Delivery and Xbox Play Anywhere. All 55 achievements are single-player and can be completed offline. There are no online, co-op, boosting, or server-dependent requirements.
As of 2026-09-21, there are no CURRENTLY CONFIRMED UNOBTAINABLE or CURRENTLY CONFIRMED DISCONTINUED achievements on this Xbox list. The Digital Deluxe and other downloadable add-ons provide items, materials, cosmetics, and support content but add no achievements. Owned DLC can be collected from Bakumatsu Bob at Teradaya beginning in Chapter 2 and is optional for this route.
Minimum practical playthroughs: one. Nothing in the side content is permanently missable because unfinished substories, bonds, Another Life work, minigames, training, Battle Dungeons, the Completion List, Memoirs, fishing, smithing, and Heat Actions remain available in Bakumatsu Premium Adventure after the story. New Game+ is not required.
The only route-sensitive achievement is Legend of an Era. You do not need to play the whole game on Legend. Play on the difficulty you prefer, make a separate manual save in the Finale before telling Okita you are ready to return to Tosa, switch to Legend, and complete the final combat sequence on Legend.
Preventative precaution: keep that pre-Okita Finale save in its own manual slot until Legend of an Era has unlocked. Do not overwrite it with your post-game clear data.
As of 2026-09-21, the following are PATCHED / NO LONGER A CURRENT ISSUE: update 1.05 fixed the old level-99 blockage, a Diligence Records display problem, Scarecrow Chateau progress failing to carry into Premium Adventure, and the old Chicken Race input exploit. This guide assumes a fully updated Xbox build. Do not plan your money grind around the patched Chicken Race refund exploit.
The efficient route is story-first but not story-only. Clear newly available substories and bonds as each chapter opens them, start long cumulative Diligence tasks immediately, begin Another Life the moment Chapter 4 unlocks it, start Third Division grinding in Chapter 5, finish the story on the Legend swap, clear the finite Ultimate Challenge set, then use Premium Adventure for the large Completion List, Diligence, smithing, level, and minigame cleanup.
▶Persistent Habits That Save Hours
From Chapter 2 onward, treat these as passive objectives rather than endgame grinds:
- Pray at shrines and Jizo statues whenever you pass them.
- Loot every usable pot you see.
- Draw water from wells whenever they are available.
- Sprint instead of walking when practical.
- Use palanquins instead of refusing fast travel.
- Buy restaurant items as individual transactions when you are raising bonds or working through menus because the Diligence restaurant counter is based on visits or transactions.
- Use food and medicine instead of hoarding all of it.
- Finish street fights instead of avoiding them, and use Special Moves frequently.
- Once Trooper Cards unlock, activate them constantly in normal fights and Battle Dungeons.
- After Another Life opens, collect the chicken egg, interact with your pets, harvest, cook, and fulfill orders every time you visit the house.
- Keep equipment drops that contain removable Seals. Disassemble useful sealed gear instead of selling it blindly. Intrinsic four-point effects belong to the equipment itself and are not recovered as inventory Seals.
- Check the Completion List and Diligence Records before deliberately grinding anything. Higher Diligence tiers are hidden until the previous tier is finished.

▶Memoirs
26 in the game
Memoirs begin with Substory 70 in Chapter 5. There are 26 total: two are awarded through Satow's substory chain and 24 are world pickups. Bakumatsu Archives > Memoirs is the authoritative in-game collection tracker. Collected Memoirs still need to be handed to Satow for his substory progression.
No required Memoir is permanently missable. Any ordinary world pickup left behind can be recovered in Bakumatsu Premium Adventure. For prerequisites with conflicting documentation, the definitions below use the conservative route conditions established for this guide.
The Rise of the Tokugawa Bakufu — awarded automatically by Ernest Satow after completing Substory 70, The Captain and the Curious, in Chapter 5.
Letter from a Tavernkeeper in Uraga — south Fushimi Ichibangai at the dock where the walkway meets the street; collect after Substory 42, Invasion of the Black Ships?, in Chapter 7.
Musings of an Official in Uraga — Mukurogai east-side pier beside Professor Shinbei's Cannon Coaching area; route it after Substory 42 in Chapter 7.
Treatise in Defense of Ii Naosuke — far end of the forest path toward Kiyomizu Temple immediately before the gate; becomes available after Substory 71, Diplomacy in Darkness.
Diary of a Housewife — Mibu path near the palanquin, Tea Parlor, and stream; collect after Substory 64, Mama Ryoma.
Final Statement on the Sonno Joui — Mukurogai beside the northern gate toward Rakugai; finish the Trash Dealer bond before the final check.
An Assassin's Plot — Mukurogai east side near the Jizo Statue and river path; collect after Substory 33, Night of the Living Rumor, from Chapter 7 onward.
Excerpt from a History Textbook — Rakugai alley immediately north of the Shady/Creepy Bar; collect after Substory 21, Sonno Joui.
Reflections of a Satsuma Samurai — at the Mysterious Merchant's shack northwest of the Rakugai well; complete Substory 27 and finish the Mysterious Merchant bond before the final reconciliation.
Regarding the Incident on the 18th — Rakunai immediately west of the palanquin and Kyo-Satsuma Consulate entrance; available after the Memoir system opens.
Diatribe of a Raid Survivor — northern Kuramachi in Fushimi, along the road west of the shrine; available after the Memoir system opens.
Gossip from a Seafaring Warrior — Teradaya second floor; turn left at the top of the stairs and continue down the short corridor; route this in Chapter 12.
Observations of a Hatamoto — Rakugai immediately outside the Gambling Den in Sannocho; available in Chapter 13.
Abandoned Journal of a Shinsengumi Trooper — Mibu immediately outside the Shinsengumi Barracks gate near the grass; available after the Memoir system opens.
Thoughts on the Wolves — Fushimi southwest Shinmachi waterside road west of Teradaya; complete Substory 20, Can I Quote You On That?, then make the guaranteed cleanup check in Chapter 9 or later, preferably at night if it has not appeared earlier.
Observations of a Mimawarigumi Trooper — Rakunai beside Sushi Zanmai on Teramachi Street; available after the Memoir system opens.
Divine Punishment Rendered Once More! — Rakunai, north side of Shijo Bridge toward Gion beside a lantern; available after the Memoir system opens.
An Account from Tosa — Rakunai, northeast Kawaramachi beyond Nichibuza and the Dance School; collect after Substory 5, Talkin' Tosa.
Musings of a Man Who Crossed the Sea — outside Shikokuya at the Rakunai/Rakugai border; complete Substory 3 earlier and collect it during the Chapter 7 sweep after Substory 42 is also clear.
The Extraordinary Voyage of Nakahama Manjiro — Rakunai west end of Teramachi south of Hanamaru Udon; collect after Substory 11, Global Fraud.
Regarding a Certain Merchant — Rakugai directly outside William Bradley's Unyuan; only access to Unyuan is required.
Journal from an Edo Rowhouse: Morning — Another Life farmhouse yard near the chicken coop and doghouse; complete Substory 62, A Warlord's Ambition, and at least one relevant dog friendship before treating it as missing.
Journal from an Edo Rowhouse: Noon — Fushimi immediately beside/south of Umai Udon; use the safe route of completing Substory 41, finishing the Umai Udon-owner bond, and checking in Chapter 8 or later.
Journal from an Edo Rowhouse: Night — Gion near the palanquin northwest of Yamabuki; route it after Substory 57, Soft and Supple.
Notes from a Spy — Gion immediately outside Ryotei Kasuga, to the right of the entrance; collect after the relevant Chapter 10 Kasuga story visit.
A Letter from the Right Honorable Sir E. Satow — awarded by completing Substory 72, A Lasting Thirst for Peace, in the Finale after Substory 71 and 25/26 Memoirs have been collected and handed to Satow.
▶Chapter 1: Escaping Home
▶Tosa and the Opening Story
Chapter 1 has no completion work worth forcing. Diligence Records and Virtue have not been introduced yet, and progress toward those systems does not count before their Chapter 2 tutorial. Follow the story and learn the four combat styles.
▶Home, Sweet Home
This is an automatic story unlock when Ryoma first sets foot in Tosa. Continue through Chapter 1 normally.
▶Chapter 2: The Man Named Saito Hajime
▶Virtue and Diligence Begin
After the story introduces the Shinto Priest, Virtue, and Diligence Records, cumulative progress finally starts counting. From this point forward, every normal interaction can contribute toward the long 100% route.
Buy the early Virtue Cultivation upgrades as soon as they are affordable. They increase future Virtue gains, so purchasing them early pays for itself across the rest of the game. Do not hoard Virtue just because several achievements require large totals; those achievements count lifetime Virtue earned, not the amount currently held.
▶Nominally Virtuous
Earn 10,000 Virtue in total. This is cumulative and spending Virtue does not reduce progress. It should unlock naturally while you clear Chapter 2 substories, use shops, pray, and complete early Diligence tasks.
▶Fairly Virtuous
Earn 50,000 Virtue in total. Keep the same route and resist grinding specifically for this milestone. Another Life, bonds, substories, minigames, and the Diligence Records will generate far more than enough Virtue over a 100% run.
▶Extraordinarily Virtuous
Earn 100,000 Virtue in total. This remains a lifetime total. It commonly arrives during the middle of the game if you are keeping side content current.
▶Divinely Virtuous
Earn 300,000 Virtue in total. This is the final Virtue milestone and will usually unlock during late Completion List and Diligence cleanup. Do not spend hours farming Virtue early; the full completion route produces a large amount naturally.
▶The Gods Smile Upon Thee
Complete 5 individual Diligence Record tasks. The achievement unlocks when the fifth task is completed. Early one-off and first-tier records make this quick once the system has been introduced.
▶The Gods Rejoice at Thee
Complete 20 Diligence Record tasks. Continue playing normally and checking pots, shrines, shops, minigames, and bonds. The achievement unlocks on task 20.
▶The Gods Sing Thy Praises
Complete 50 Diligence Record tasks. This normally lands after several chapters of normal completion-focused play. Higher tiers count as separate tasks when they appear and are completed.
▶Diligence Long-Game Setup
The Gods Hath Been Humbled requires every Diligence Record task. Do not attempt this in Chapter 2. The system spans Adventure, Another Life, shop bonds, other bonds, and Battle records, and several requirements depend on content that does not unlock until later chapters. Start the passive counters now and finish the remaining checklist in Premium Adventure.
The longest verified final-tier Adventure targets include talking to people or animals 500 times, 200 restaurant visits, 100 pot items, 100 shrine or Jizo prayers, 100 minigame sessions, 400 food items consumed, 200 medicinal items used, 30 palanquin rides, maximum reputation in all five districts, 500 ryo spent, 150 km traveled, 50 km sprinted, 50 well draws, 20 Frequently Lost Courier deliveries, and 500 logs chopped. Another Life and Battle have their own large counters that this route introduces when they become available.
▶Fushimi Side Content and Early Minigames
Substories begin appearing after the Virtue tutorial. Clear every Chapter 2 substory you naturally encounter. Several of them are not marked before they start, so thoroughly walk Fushimi, enter Teradaya rooms, and speak to conspicuous NPCs. Do not worry about perfect substory cleanup yet because Chapter 5 gives you the Inviting Hat, which reveals currently available substory starts on the map.
Start bonds as they appear. A finished bond counts toward Everybody Loves Ryoma and also clears Diligence friendship tasks. Revisit bond NPCs whenever you are already in their area rather than doing a dedicated loop later.
▶Making a Difference
Complete any one Bond. Several Chapter 2 substories create early bond NPCs, so pick one convenient bond and fill its gauge. The achievement unlocks when the first bond fully completes, not when it is merely started.
▶You've Got Soul
Spend Soul Orbs to unlock any 10 ability nodes across the combat style grids. Training Orbs and style-specific Orbs both work for normal ability progression. This should happen naturally very early, but do not leave Orbs unused because later master training and Heat Action completion depend on deeper skill trees.
▶A Well-Rounded Cast
Catch 10 fish in total after the Chapter 2 Diligence/Virtue introduction. The achievement is cumulative and does not require 10 different species.
Doing the 10 catches now also starts the 25/50/100-fish Diligence chain. Fishing performed before the Diligence system is introduced should not be used for this intentional grind because that earlier progress does not reliably count toward Diligence.
Leave the complete 29-species sweep until all four fishing environments are accessible and, preferably, Another Life is active.
▶Sing Your Heart Out
At Utamaruya in Fushimi, perform every available song at least once. There are seven songs. Finishing each song once is enough for this achievement; the stricter Completion List requirement comes later.
For Completion List cleanup, you need Preferred Performer or higher on all seven songs. When the singing bar gives a backup-style choice, use Passionate Backup; Casual Backup's capped result cannot satisfy the required rank.
▶Noodle-Slinger Supreme
Build the Umai Udon owner bond until the Udon Shop work minigame becomes available, then keep playing until your cumulative sales reach at least 10 ryo. The achievement tracks total sales across shifts; you do not need 10 ryo in one run.
For the later Completion List requirement, you need Divine rank in a single shift, which is tied to roughly 5 ryo of sales. A legitimate quality-of-life trick is to pause while the order prompts are visible, memorize or write down the inputs, unpause, and enter them quickly. That remains useful throughout the minigame.
▶Finish Chapter 2
Before advancing, make sure you have at least started the obvious Fushimi bonds, Udon work, fishing, singing, Komaki training, woodcutting, and the Frequently Lost Courier chain if available. Nothing here is permanently missable, so do not stall the story for content that clearly has not opened yet.
▶Losing a Brother
Complete Chapter 2. This is an automatic story achievement.
▶Chapter 3: Mibu Wolves
▶The Full City Opens Up
Chapter 3 is the first major side-content expansion. Rakugai, Rakunai, Mukurogai, smithing, all remaining combat masters, the Arena, Wanted Men, Scarecrow Chateau, Cannon Coaching, Chicken Racing, the Gambling Den, Buyo Dance, Shogi, and much more of Kyo are now available.
Walk through each district rather than beelining the story marker. Start every bond and substory you see, open each training location, and buy or eat one inexpensive item at new shops and restaurants. This both raises district reputation and prevents a large discovery sweep later.
Fishing access is also effectively complete once Mukurogai can be revisited freely: Uji River and both sea-fishing destinations are reached from Fushimi, while Kamo River is in Mukurogai.
▶Student Among Masters
Use the safe completion route of completing at least one actual training mission with all five master systems: Komaki in Fushimi, Ginryu in Rakunai, William Bradley in Rakugai, Professor Shinbei's Cannon Coaching in Mukurogai, and Professor Juubei's Scarecrow Chateau in Rakugai.
The exact narrower trigger set for Student Among Masters is disputed. Komaki, Ginryu, and William are consistently treated as qualifying combat masters, while current documentation disagrees on whether Shinbei and Scarecrow Chateau are also part of the literal achievement trigger. Because all five systems are required for broader Completion List work, train with all five and allow the achievement to unlock during that progression rather than treating any particular fifth activity as a confirmed trigger.
Continue every master's full training later because all five systems are also required for Taskmaster.
▶Tengu Tamer
Tengu Tamer15G
Go to the Tachibanagumi office on Mukurogai's upper level and begin the Wanted Men chain. Clear the first assignments until you defeat Jozo Tengu. The achievement unlocks when that Tengu target is brought down. Keep doing new Wanted Men missions as they appear because all of them are required for Taskmaster and the eighth Wanted Man later supplies Book of Revelations: Smash.
▶Lord of the Dance
Trigger the Nichibuza substory in Rakunai to open Buyo Dance. Perform each of the three songs at least once to unlock the achievement. You do not need every difficulty for this achievement.
For Taskmaster, each of the three songs must eventually earn First Class or Buyo God on all four difficulties. Leave the hardest Geisha runs until you are ready to focus on them rather than burning story time here.
▶Easy Come, Easy Go
Try each gambling type once: Chicken Racing, Cee-lo, Cho-han, Oicho-kabu, Koi-koi, and Poker. Mahjong does not count toward this achievement even though it uses wagering. The achievement unlocks after the final required gambling type has been played.
A manual save before gambling sessions is sensible if you are short on money or tags. Reloading a loss is normal save management. Do not use old guides that recommend the Chicken Race exit-and-start refund exploit; that input exploit was patched in update 1.05.
▶Cocksure
Cocksure15G
Place a bet in five separate chicken races. You do not need to win the five races. For the Completion List you will later need 10,000 Chicken Race points cumulatively, so these first five races are useful progress rather than wasted attempts.
▶This is MY Ring!
At the Mukurogai Arena, win 10 Arena battles. Individual opponent wins count toward the achievement, so you do not need to clear every tournament before it unlocks. For Taskmaster, keep the Arena for later when your build is stronger because the Completion List requires defeating every Knockout Match opponent, while the Hundred Man Beatdown is not required for Completion List completion.
▶Showoff
Showoff15G
From now on, deliberately finish enemies with Special Moves activated with RT. The requirement is 100 defeated enemies using Special Moves outside Ultimate Challenges. There is no in-game achievement counter, so build this naturally in street fights and later Battle Dungeons instead of leaving all 100 for the end.
Gunman and Wild Dancer Special Moves are particularly useful because they can hit groups. The achievement unlocks on the 100th qualifying enemy defeated by a Special Move.
▶Chapter 3 Substory Sweep
A large batch of substories opens in Chapter 3. Clear what the city offers before joining the Shinsengumi, especially chains that introduce bonds or activities. Some side content has prerequisites, so an empty spot does not mean the route is broken; clear the available substories around it and return later.
▶Kyo's Little Helper
Complete any 10 Substories. A completion-focused Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 sweep provides more than enough opportunities. The achievement unlocks immediately when your 10th substory is completed.
▶Chapter 4: Joint Struggle
▶Gion, Restaurants, and the Remaining Minigame Types
Chapter 4 safely opens the remaining major city activity needed for the minigame achievement route, including the Yamabuki courtesan games in Gion. Continue buying one item from every restaurant you encounter, but do not try to clear every menu item yet because some restaurant items only appear after their associated shop bonds progress.
▶Like a Dragon in Heaven
Visit Yamabuki in Gion and complete the introductory sequence with Anna. On the first full visit you are taken through Sake Showdown, Rock Paper Scissors, and Sensual Healing. Clear all three and the achievement unlocks.
For the Completion List, you later need to clear all three games on the three standard difficulties. Sensual Healing has an additional Super Asura tier, but that extra tier is not required for Completion List completion. Save before paid attempts if money is tight.
▶The Man Who Does It All
By Chapter 4, every required activity can be sampled. Play Woodcutting, Fishing, Singing, Buyo Dance, Udon Shop, all three Courtesan games, Mahjong, Shogi, Chicken Racing, Cee-lo, Cho-han, Oicho-kabu, Koi-koi, and Poker at least once.
The achievement unlocks once the game has registered participation in every minigame type. You do not need to satisfy the much harder Completion List score or win conditions for this achievement.
▶I'll Have One of Everything
Order at least one item from every restaurant in Kyo. By this point the major districts are accessible, so begin a deliberate restaurant sweep whenever you are moving through Fushimi, Rakugai, Rakunai, Mukurogai, Gion, and Mibu-related routes.
This achievement only asks for one item at each restaurant, not every menu item. Taskmaster later requires every menu item, including items exposed by certain restaurant bonds and a time-sensitive lunch menu at Shippoku Momokawa, so keep restaurant bonds moving even after this achievement unlocks.
▶Another Life Opens
The story introduces Haruka and your second home near the beginning of Chapter 4. This is a major long-term completion system. Start it immediately because crops, eggs, pet interactions, Haruka trust, cooking, fishing, and trade-order totals all benefit from repeated visits over time.
Spend Virtue on farm expansion, crop access, the chicken coop, pet facilities, and the three kitchen upgrades as you can afford them. Do not wait until Premium Adventure to begin the passive cycles.
This is also the practical window for the dedicated fishing-species sweep once you can afford the full rod-upgrade path. The Peerless Pole costs 7,800 Virtue in total through River Classic Expertise, Rivermaster Expertise, Sea Classic Expertise, Seamaster Expertise, and Peerless Pole Expertise. It is the recommended completion setup because it gives you the best general reach, but it is not a certified hard requirement for every fish.
▶Fishing Species Completion
The Another Life Completion List requires 29 distinct fish species. Buying fish from Uorin Fish Market can supply cooking or trade inventory, but bought fish do not replace the requirement to catch the species yourself.
Use the Peerless Pole when practical. The complete rod path costs 7,800 Virtue, but the pole is a recommended completion tool rather than a hard requirement for every species.
Bait is especially useful for Ghost Koi, Stringfish, Common Octopus, Porcupinefish, Japanese Puffer, Marlin, Bluefin Tuna, and Oarfish. Treat bait as a visibility/spawn-rate aid rather than a universal mandatory requirement.
Work one fishing environment at a time.
Uji River — nine represented species
- Crucian Carp
- Carp
- Nishikigoi
- Ghost Koi
- Electric Catfish
- Salmon
- Rainbow Trout
- Softshell Turtle
- Crawfish
Ghost Koi is the main awkward target here. Use bait if its medium silhouette is not appearing clearly.
Kamo River — eight represented species
- Crucian Carp
- Electric Catfish
- Salmon
- Rainbow Trout
- Crawfish
- Stringfish
- Freshwater Eel
- Sweetfish
The three species unique to this environment are Stringfish, Freshwater Eel, and Sweetfish. Stringfish is a far-moving normal silhouette and is easier to expose with bait.
Fishing Banks — ten represented species
- Squid
- Sea Bream
- Scorpionfish
- Thread-Sail Filefish
- Tiger Prawn
- Goby
- Common Octopus
- Porcupinefish
- Japanese Puffer
- Whitebait
Common Octopus is beside the central rock and can be hooked by casting right beside it even when the silhouette is difficult to see. Porcupinefish and Japanese Puffer are easily confused with other blob-shaped targets, so bait is useful.
East Coast — nine represented species
- Thread-Sail Filefish
- Whitebait
- Marlin
- Bluefin Tuna
- Righteye Flounder
- Conger Eel
- Great White Shark
- Oarfish
- Spider Crab
East Coast should be your final planned stop because it transitions directly into the two Bluefin Tuna Diligence objectives.
After catching all 29 distinct species, remain at East Coast until you have caught 10 Bluefin Tuna.
For Bluefin Boss, catch a qualifying big Bluefin Tuna. Gold-grade tuna are associated with the required size class, but there is no reliable exact numerical threshold to memorize. Keep targeting large Bluefin Tuna until the Diligence Record itself registers.
Do not rely on an immutable "one tuna grade per fishing session" rule. If current catches are unhelpful, apply strong bait and/or exit and re-enter East Coast to refresh the fishing state.
Only after the 29 species, 10 Bluefin Tuna, and big-tuna objective are complete should you grind ordinary fish to finish the 100-total-fish Diligence record.
▶An Honest Day's Work
Grow and harvest 10 different kinds of plants in the garden. Unlock additional crop types through the Virtue exchange, plant a varied field, and harvest each type. The achievement unlocks when the 10th distinct plant type is harvested.
For full Diligence completion, you eventually need 1,500 produce harvested, including 50 ginseng and 100 each of cabbage, taro, tomato, and strawberry. Rotate those crops into the farm throughout the story instead of doing all of them in one late block.
▶Chef's Special
Cook 7 different dishes at the second home. Buy kitchen upgrades through the Virtue exchange so more recipes are available and use your farm and fishing ingredients to produce seven distinct meals.
For Taskmaster, every recipe must eventually be cooked. One recipe, Revolutionary Croquettes, comes from completing the Revolutionary Chef bond, so full cooking completion cannot be treated as only a kitchen-upgrade task.
▶Side Hustler
Side Hustler15G
Fulfill 10 trade orders at the second home. This is only the first milestone. Keep fulfilling orders every visit because Diligence requires 200 total orders and the Completion List requires 100 ryo earned through trading.
Produce orders are usually the easiest repeatable work once your farm is upgraded. Do not sell away rare crafting materials simply to accelerate an early order.
▶Platonic Bliss
Raise Haruka's trust through normal Another Life activity and trigger any Slice of Life event at the house. The achievement unlocks when the first qualifying Slice of Life scene is watched.
Diligence ultimately requires all four Haruka scenes: the introductory scene plus three later trust-gated scenes tied to household interactions. As trust rises, check the bath, the tea or cooking-pot area, and the futon when appropriate rather than assuming one scene is enough for 100%.
▶Now It Feels Like Home
Buy at least one alternate interior through a Virtue exchange. Purchasing it can automatically change the room, but that alone is not the achievement trigger. Inside the second home, use the interior-change box and manually select a different interior. The achievement unlocks when you perform that manual change.
▶World's Greatest Uncle
Haruka's debt is 100 ryo, paid in five installments of 20 ryo. Debt-payment letters arrive as your Another Life and trade progress advances. Read each letter, then visit the landlord at the Fushimi shrine and pay the next 20 ryo installment.
Do not try to force the entire debt immediately if it would bankrupt your combat and smithing funds. Keep trading throughout the story, reserve money for the installments, and pay each one when its letter arrives. The achievement unlocks after the fifth 20 ryo payment resolves the debt.
▶Finish Chapter 4
Before advancing, establish a routine at the second home and clear the Chapter 4 substory wave. Keep pets, shop bonds, restaurant visits, Haruka trust, and fishing progress moving because all of them overlap with Diligence and Completion List requirements.
▶A Messy Investigation
Complete Chapter 4. This is an automatic story achievement.
▶Chapter 5: The Iron Code
▶Third Division and Battle Dungeons
Chapter 5 formally gives Ryoma command of the Third Division. The story walks you through the Battle Dungeon tutorial, after which Trooper Cards, the Trooper Registry, enlistment, and repeatable Battle Dungeons become available.
From now on, activate Trooper abilities constantly. Diligence eventually requires 1,500 activations, and Battle Dungeons are where you will spend a large portion of the endgame material grind anyway.
Always accept new unique Troopers from dungeon clears and hooded street enemies. The Trooper Registry is the easiest way to confirm whether a recruit is genuinely new.
As equipment drops begin to accumulate, inspect them before selling. A removable Seal in an ordinary open slot can be recovered by dismantling the gear. A four-point intrinsic effect cannot.
During repeated Battle Dungeon money farming, keep some Trooper capacity free rather than sitting at 500/500. Completion-focused documentation has reported missed dungeon money at the cap. Treat this as a cheap preventative precaution, not as a confirmed current Xbox-wide defect.
▶The Abyss Stares Back
The displayed description says to enter a Battle Dungeon three times, but completion documentation consistently reports the unlock after completing three dungeon runs. Use the lowest-cost safe route: finish the mandatory tutorial dungeon, then fully clear two additional easy missions. The achievement should unlock at the end of the third completed run.
▶Bandit Rustler
Clear the entire Bandits' Cave set of Battle Dungeons. There are 10 missions in this first region. Start pushing through them as soon as your gear and Troopers make the runs comfortable.
If the final Cave missions are slowing the story badly, stop and return later. Nothing is missable, and stronger weapons make the dungeon grind much faster. The achievement unlocks when the last Bandits' Cave mission is cleared.
▶Drop and Give Me 100
Gather 100 unique Troopers for the Third Division. Duplicates do not advance the hidden unique roster requirement. Recruit hooded enemies in street encounters, accept post-dungeon recruits, and use Enlistment when you have spare money.
This is a long cumulative achievement, so start now and let it build while you work through all Battle Dungeons. The achievement unlocks when your unique recruited Trooper count reaches 100.
▶Chapter 5 City Cleanup
Chapter 5 is the key substory-cleanup point because Substory 63, The Boy Who Cried Bear, becomes available after Substory 60. Completing it rewards the Inviting Hat. Equip the Inviting Hat whenever you are doing side-content sweeps; it displays currently available unfinished substory starts on the map.
The hat does not bypass prerequisites, reveal some indoor or special-case triggers, or make future-chapter substories appear early. Use it to clear what is currently available, then repeat the sweep when later chapters open new content.
During this Chapter 5 sweep, complete Substory 70, The Captain and the Curious, to begin Ernest Satow's Memoir system. It awards the first Memoir and activates Bakumatsu Archives > Memoirs.
From this point onward, collect Memoirs as their prerequisites open and hand them to Satow regularly. Finding a Memoir and handing it to Satow are separate progression states.
▶Chapter 5 Memoir Sweep

Work the Memoir pickups into the same substory and bond sweep rather than running to locations before their prerequisites exist.
- The Rise of the Tokugawa Bakufu: automatically awarded by Satow when Substory 70 finishes.
- Diary of a Housewife: after Substory 64, check the Mibu path near the palanquin, Tea Parlor, and stream.
- Final Statement on the Sonno Joui: finish the Trash Dealer bond, then check beside Mukurogai's northern gate toward Rakugai. If it does not appear immediately, leave and re-enter the district before treating it as missing.
- Excerpt from a History Textbook: after Substory 21, check the Rakugai alley immediately north of the Shady/Creepy Bar.
- Reflections of a Satsuma Samurai: complete Substory 27 and finish the Mysterious Merchant bond, then check the merchant's shack northwest of the Rakugai well.
- Regarding the Incident on the 18th: Rakunai immediately west of the palanquin and Kyo-Satsuma Consulate entrance.
- Diatribe of a Raid Survivor: northern Kuramachi in Fushimi, along the road west of the shrine.
- Abandoned Journal of a Shinsengumi Trooper: immediately outside the Shinsengumi Barracks gate in Mibu near the grass.
- Observations of a Mimawarigumi Trooper: beside Sushi Zanmai on Teramachi Street in Rakunai.
- Divine Punishment Rendered Once More!: north side of Shijo Bridge toward Gion beside a lantern.
- An Account from Tosa: after Substory 5, check northeast Kawaramachi beyond Nichibuza and the Dance School.
- The Extraordinary Voyage of Nakahama Manjiro: after Substory 11, check west Teramachi south of Hanamaru Udon.
- Regarding a Certain Merchant: directly outside William Bradley's Unyuan after you have gained access to it.
- Journal from an Edo Rowhouse: Morning: at the Another Life farmhouse near the chicken coop and doghouse after Substory 62 and at least one relevant dog friendship.
- Journal from an Edo Rowhouse: Night: in Gion near the palanquin northwest of Yamabuki after Substory 57.
If one of these does not spawn despite appearing to be available, satisfy the full safe prerequisite set first, then leave and re-enter the area. Do not repeatedly grind area refreshes before finishing the prerequisite.
▶On the Level
On the Level15G
Reach character Level 50. With Battle Dungeons, street fights, substories, training, and the story all active, this should happen naturally before the full completion grind ends. Do not stop to farm Level 50 specifically unless you are severely underleveled; you eventually need Level 99 for Limit Breaker.
▶Social Butterfly
Raise any one district's Social Rank or reputation to maximum. Fushimi and Rakunai are usually the easiest to finish naturally because you spend and interact there constantly.
Do not overgrind a single district just for the achievement if it is already close. Full Diligence later requires maximum reputation in all five districts, so every restaurant purchase, sale, shop transaction, substory, and bond contributes to work you must eventually do anyway.
▶Saint of Kyo
Saint of Kyo15G
Complete 40 Substories. By Chapter 5 a large majority of the game's 72 substories can be available if you have kept earlier chapters clean. Equip the Inviting Hat, sweep all districts, and complete any prerequisite chains you have left. The achievement unlocks on your 40th completed substory.
▶Halfway There
Bring the Completion List to 50%. Chapter 5 is the first sensible checkpoint for this because most major completion systems are now open, but the exact moment will vary with how much minigame, restaurant, Another Life, and side-content work you have already done.
Do not grind a bad activity simply to force 50%. Keep following the route and clearing Completion List entries you already need for Taskmaster; the achievement unlocks automatically when the in-game Completion List reaches 50%.
▶Chapters 6 and 7: Keep the Side Systems Moving
▶Chapter 6 Story Window
A new substory wave becomes available during Chapter 6. Before pushing too far, equip the Inviting Hat, sweep the city, complete new Wanted Men work, and make your usual Another Life visit. Keep Special Move kills and Trooper activations rolling in every fight.
▶That Was Close!
Complete Chapter 6. This is an automatic story achievement.
▶Chapter 7 Story Window
Chapter 7 opens another set of important Memoir prerequisites. Clear the new map markers from the Inviting Hat, then focus the Chapter 7 side work that feeds Satow's chain.
Complete Substory 42, Invasion of the Black Ships?, Substory 33, Night of the Living Rumor, and ensure Substory 3, Who's Entertaining Who?, is already complete. Complete Substory 20, Can I Quote You On That?, as well, but do not force Thoughts on the Wolves here if it has not spawned yet.
▶Chapter 7 Memoir Sweep
▶Collectibles · 4 4 collectibles
Letter from a Tavernkeeper in Uraga — south Fushimi Ichibangai at the dock where the walkway meets the street; collect after Substory 42, Invasion of the Black Ships?, in Chapter 7.
Musings of an Official in Uraga — Mukurogai east-side pier beside Professor Shinbei's Cannon Coaching area; route it after Substory 42 in Chapter 7.
An Assassin's Plot — Mukurogai east side near the Jizo Statue and river path; collect after Substory 33, Night of the Living Rumor, from Chapter 7 onward.
Musings of a Man Who Crossed the Sea — outside Shikokuya at the Rakunai/Rakugai border; complete Substory 3 earlier and collect it during the Chapter 7 sweep after Substory 42 is also clear.
After those prerequisite substories:
- Letter from a Tavernkeeper in Uraga: south Fushimi Ichibangai at the dock where the walkway meets the street, after Substory 42.
- Musings of an Official in Uraga: Mukurogai east-side pier beside Professor Shinbei's Cannon Coaching area. Route this after Substory 42.
- An Assassin's Plot: Mukurogai east near the Jizo Statue and river path after Substory 33.
- Musings of a Man Who Crossed the Sea: outside Shikokuya at the Rakunai/Rakugai border. Use the safe route of having both Substory 3 and Substory 42 complete.
Check Bakumatsu Archives after the sweep. Once it reaches 19/26, hand every available Memoir to Satow and attempt Substory 71, Diplomacy in Darkness.
Nineteen Memoirs is the strongest-supported earliest collectible threshold, but the event does not always become visible on the same visit. If Satow does not advance:
- confirm Substory 70 is complete
- hand him every collected Memoir
- exhaust his current Memoir discussion
- leave Fushimi and return
- try another available time state
- continue normal story progress and recheck at the next free-roam window
Do not treat failure to trigger immediately as proof that you need a different universal Memoir count.
▶After Diplomacy in Darkness
▶Collectibles · 1 1 collectible
Treatise in Defense of Ii Naosuke — far end of the forest path toward Kiyomizu Temple immediately before the gate; becomes available after Substory 71, Diplomacy in Darkness.
As soon as Substory 71 is completed:
- Complete Substory 38, Precious Packages.
- Go to the forest path toward Kiyomizu Temple.
- At the far end immediately before the gate, collect Treatise in Defense of Ii Naosuke.
A specific nighttime requirement for this Memoir is not established. Changing time is only a troubleshooting step if it does not appear after Substory 71.
At this point, the efficient route is still not to finish the giant minigame and smithing grinds. Keep prerequisites, bonds, Memoirs, fishing, and passive counters current while story access continues expanding.
▶Chapters 8 Through 10: Late-Game Unlocks
▶Chapter 8
Continue the story, clear new side-content markers, and revisit the Third Division. More expensive Enlistment options become available as the story advances, but do not pour money into recruiting if Battle Dungeons and hooded street enemies are still giving you new Troopers cheaply.
This is also the safe point to resolve Journal from an Edo Rowhouse: Noon after its prerequisite work is complete.
▶The Bottom Drops Out
Complete Chapter 8. This is an automatic story achievement.
▶Chapters 9 and 10
Keep the Inviting Hat equipped during exploration. Chapter 10 unlocks the last normal pre-Finale wave of substories, including late entries in several chains. This is also a good time to finish the main William, Komaki, Ginryu, Wanted Men, and Scarecrow prerequisite chains if you have been postponing them, because Revelations and Limit Breaker depend on them.
▶Chapters 8-10 Memoir Checks
▶Collectibles · 3 3 collectibles
Journal from an Edo Rowhouse: Noon — Fushimi immediately beside/south of Umai Udon; use the safe route of completing Substory 41, finishing the Umai Udon-owner bond, and checking in Chapter 8 or later.
Thoughts on the Wolves — Fushimi southwest Shinmachi waterside road west of Teradaya; complete Substory 20, Can I Quote You On That?, then make the guaranteed cleanup check in Chapter 9 or later, preferably at night if it has not appeared earlier.
Notes from a Spy — Gion immediately outside Ryotei Kasuga, to the right of the entrance; collect after the relevant Chapter 10 Kasuga story visit.
Resolve these three delayed pickups in their safe windows:
- Journal from an Edo Rowhouse: Noon: complete Substory 41, finish the Umai Udon-owner bond, then check immediately beside/south of Umai Udon in Chapter 8 or later. The exact minimum spawn gate is disputed, so use the complete safe condition rather than guessing.
- Thoughts on the Wolves: complete Substory 20, then make the guaranteed route check in Chapter 9 or later on the southwest Shinmachi waterside road west of Teradaya. If it is absent, try nighttime before treating it as missing.
- Notes from a Spy: after the relevant Chapter 10 Ryotei Kasuga story visit, check immediately outside Kasuga, to the right of the entrance.
▶Secrets Revealed
Complete Chapter 10. This is an automatic story achievement.
▶Chapters 11 and 12: Prepare the Endgame Build
▶Story and Combat Preparation
Continue clearing any newly available side prerequisites, but prioritize a strong weapon, solid armor, healing stock, and useful Trooper Cards over attempting 100% smithing before the finale. If you still need unique Troopers, keep using hooded street recruits, dungeon recruits, and Enlistment without draining the money you need for the endgame.
Keep a healthy cash reserve. You still have the Legend finale, Haruka's debt, expensive Completion List smithing, and paid minigames ahead.
▶Chapter 12 Memoir
▶Collectibles · 1 1 collectible
Gossip from a Seafaring Warrior — Teradaya second floor; turn left at the top of the stairs and continue down the short corridor; route this in Chapter 12.
During Chapter 12, go upstairs in Teradaya, turn left at the top of the stairs, and continue down the short corridor to collect Gossip from a Seafaring Warrior.
Do not intentionally delay this Memoir to Chapter 13. If it is unexpectedly absent during the Chapter 12 check, Chapter 13 remains a harmless fallback.
▶Cold Betrayal
Complete Chapter 12. This is an automatic story achievement.
▶Chapter 13 and Finale: Finish the One-Run Story Route
▶Final Substories and Memoirs
Substories 70 through 72 form the Ernest Satow and Memoirs chain. Substory 70 should already have introduced Memoirs during the Chapter 5 sweep, and Substory 71 may already have been completed from Chapter 7 onward once you reached 19/26 and handed them in.
If Substory 71 is still unfinished, hand every current Memoir to Satow, exhaust his conversation, refresh Fushimi, and continue story progress as needed until the event appears. Do not assume a later trigger invalidates the 19/26 threshold.
Substory 38, Precious Packages, should be completed immediately after Substory 71.
▶Chapter 13 Memoir Reconciliation
▶Collectibles · 1 1 collectible
Observations of a Hatamoto — Rakugai immediately outside the Gambling Den in Sannocho; available in Chapter 13.
Collect Observations of a Hatamoto immediately outside the Gambling Den in Sannocho, Rakugai.
Then open Bakumatsu Archives > Memoirs and reconcile the complete manifest before entering the final sequence.
Your target before Substory 72 is 25/26 Memoirs collected and handed to Satow.
If any ordinary Memoir is missing, identify the exact title from the Archive and return to its listed location only after verifying its prerequisite. Percentage alone is not enough to diagnose a missing spawn.
▶Savior of Kyo
▶Collectibles · 1 1 collectible
A Letter from the Right Honorable Sir E. Satow — awarded by completing Substory 72, A Lasting Thirst for Peace, in the Finale after Substory 71 and 25/26 Memoirs have been collected and handed to Satow.
There are 72 substories in the 2023 remake.
In the Finale, with Substory 71 complete and 25/26 Memoirs collected and handed to Satow, return to Satow's Fushimi area and trigger Substory 72, A Lasting Thirst for Peace.
Complete its fight and return to Satow. Substory 72 awards A Letter from the Right Honorable Sir E. Satow, the 26th and final Memoir.
A specific time of day is not part of the certified requirement. If the event fails to appear despite meeting the contract and refreshing the area, trying noon is a reasonable low-cost fallback, not a mandatory prerequisite.
Verify:
- Substory 72 complete
- 26/26 Memoirs
- Bakumatsu Archives > Memoirs at 100%
- all 72 Substories complete
If Savior of Kyo still does not unlock, equip the Inviting Hat and sweep every district and relevant interior, including Mukurogai's upper level, then compare the in-game Substory list for the missing number. No substory is permanently missable, and leftovers can be completed in Premium Adventure.
▶Point of No Return and Legend Setup
The relevant story commitment is speaking to Okita at the Shinsengumi Barracks and confirming that you are ready to return to Tosa. Before that conversation:
- Make a separate manual save in its own slot.
- Stock strong healing items.
- Equip your best weapon and armor.
- Equip reliable Trooper Cards.
- Finish any side work you specifically want for better gear, but do not feel forced to finish Taskmaster first.
- Change difficulty to Legend before confirming with Okita.
The final sequence contains normal enemies and several bosses. You only need this final combat stretch completed on Legend for the difficulty achievement, so the rest of the playthrough can remain on any difficulty.
▶Hero of a Nation
Complete the final chapter. This unlocks from finishing the story. After the long ending sequence, create clear data when prompted so Bakumatsu Premium Adventure and Ultimate Challenge are available from the title menu.
▶Legend of an Era
Complete the final combat sequence and ending with the difficulty set to Legend before the Okita commitment. The achievement unlocks after the finale has fully resolved.
If the Legend attempt is too difficult, return to the separate pre-Okita manual save, improve equipment or level as needed, set Legend again, and retry. Do not rely on changing difficulty after the final combat has already begun.
▶Ultimate Challenges
▶Post-Story Main Menu Challenge Set
Ultimate Challenge unlocks from the title menu after the story is completed. It is separate from Bakumatsu Premium Adventure and uses predetermined versions of Ryoma rather than your normal save's equipment and Seals.
The complete set is:
- 10 Combat Challenges
- 10 Skill Challenges
- 5 Speed Challenges
- 5 Ultimate Challenges
- 30 total
Legendary Ryoma has maximum abilities. Weakest Ryoma uses the no-ability/base state. Individual challenges then provide their own fixed weapons and restrictions.
Normal-save grinding does not make these challenge states stronger, so this finite challenge mode can efficiently be done now before the longer Premium Adventure grind.
After clearing several challenges, periodically back out to the title menu and re-enter Ultimate Challenge to confirm the clear marks have been recorded. Treat this as a persistence precaution rather than a claim that every individual clear requires a menu exit.
▶Combat Challenges
- Combat 1: defeat 15 enemies in 2:00 as Legendary Ryoma with Dragon Slayer + Model 14. Gunman or Wild Dancer clears the crowd efficiently. Heat Action cinematics stop the challenge timer while they play.
- Combat 2: defeat 30 enemies in 1:30 as Legendary Ryoma with Ame-no-Murakumo + Vortex. Gunman rapid fire is the simplest route.
- Combat 3: defeat 10 enemies in 1:30 using Brawler. The armored flaming-sword enemy is the time sink. Build Heat, grab him near the railing, and use the ledge Heat Action to throw him into the pit when the setup cooperates. Essence of Swinging from the legs of a downed weaker enemy is the crowd-damage fallback.
- Combat 4: defeat 12 enemies in 0:40 using Swordsman with Blade of the Shogun. Close on the firearm users aggressively; Leaping Maelstrom is useful when three targets group together.
- Combat 5: defeat 9 enemies in 1:00 using Gunman with Model 14. Remove the Ninja early so stun projectiles do not waste time, then spend Heat on the armored enemy.
- Combat 6: defeat 12 armored enemies in 1:30 using Wild Dancer with Dragon Slayer + Model 14. Use sword strings to strip armor, then Phoenix attacks and Heat Actions.
- Combat 7: defeat 7 enemies in 0:15 as Weakest Ryoma using Brawler. Rush continuously and avoid being knocked down by the spear/club enemies.
- Combat 8: defeat 21 enemies in 1:00 as Weakest Ryoma with Bundle Blade + Domestic Revolver. Use Gunman, clear the weak wave immediately, then return for the stronger group.
- Combat 9: escape Kochi Castle in 5:00 as Legendary Ryoma with Futsu-no-Mitama + Vortex. Gunman deletes normal enemies; switch to melee against armored blockers.
- Combat 10: defeat 50 enemies in 2:00 without taking a hit as Weakest Ryoma. One hit fails the challenge. Stay near the middle, use Gunman, rotate toward new spawns, and prioritize firearm users and long-reach spear enemies.
After Combat 10, back out and verify all ten Combat clear marks.
▶Skill Challenges
- Skill 1: defeat every enemy using Heat Actions only. Each Heat Action can damage only once, so rotate through different ground, grab, wall, movement, and style-specific Heat Actions.
- Skill 2: defeat all enemies using Special Moves only. Heat continually replenishes. Wild Dancer and Gunman handle groups well; use Brawler or Swordsman against isolated armored enemies when useful.
- Skill 3: destroy all Scarecrows in 3:30 as Legendary Ryoma with Dragon Slayer + Model 3. Use Gunman, get behind black Scarecrows when practical, and remove ranged red Scarecrows quickly.
- Skill 4: achieve a 99-hit combo in 1:00. Wild Dancer is the safest route. Maintain Phoenix strings and dodge-cancel transitions without taking a hit or letting the combo expire.
- Skill 5: reach Deadly combat rank. The visible/localized wording can say Godly, but Godly does not clear the challenge. Rank progression is Rough → Solid → Sharp → Keen → Bloody → Godly → Deadly. Mix last-second evasions, different combo lengths, counters, finishers, Heat Actions, and high-hit strings.
- Skill 6: protect Akimoto. Sources disagree on whether surviving the full timer alone can clear it, so use the deterministic route: stay close to Akimoto and defeat the entire enemy group before he falls.
- Skill 7: defeat 100 enemies with the mounted cannon in 1:30 as Weakest Ryoma. Fire continuously and prioritize armored targets once the reticle turns red.
- Skill 8: defeat the red Ninja, then yellow Ninja, then blue Ninja, in exactly that order, while damaging nobody else. Isolate each target and use controlled single-target attacks. Avoid wide Wild Dancer attacks and uncontrolled gunfire.
- Skill 9: defeat 8 enemies in 1:30 using only picked-up weapons. Bluefin Tuna and lumber/poles work normally. A hidden Phoenix Cannon beside the doorway near the tuna area is an easier alternate pickup. Avoid pickup-weapon Heat Actions as a precaution because of a historical report that they could make other pickups disappear for that attempt. Restart if the weapon pool unexpectedly vanishes.
- Skill 10: defeat all enemies as Legendary Ryoma with Ame-no-Murakumo + Double Flash. There is no timer. Ignore the visible gatling guns and use ordinary Gunman/Wild Dancer combat against the normal and armored enemies.
Back out again and verify all ten Skill clears.
▶Speed Challenges
- Speed 1: reach the Imperial Palace in 0:50. Take the direct northbound route and sprint in controlled bursts so Ryoma does not fully exhaust himself.
- Speed 2: collect 10 eggs without touching a chicken. Follow a continuous route between egg sparkles rather than doubling back through the pursuing flock.
- Speed 3: escape the Shinsengumi and reach Mukurogai within 2:00. Detection and grabs are recoverable. Mash out if grabbed, then hide or loop around buildings near the endpoint until pursuit is broken before entering the goal.
- Speed 4: reach Teradaya within 5:00 without being detected. Being spotted fails the attempt. Use the riverside approach, palanquin hiding point, then barrel, and move only when patrols face away. If a patrol becomes obviously stuck or spins in place, restart; that behavior has been reported historically but is not established as a current Xbox-wide blocker.
- Speed 5: catch the Ultimate General. Sprint in bursts and cut corners. The Chicken Race-side alley helps close the gap, but do not emerge far enough ahead to make the target reverse course. Use the grab/interact input when within range.
Back out and verify the 25 pre-Ultimate challenges. The five Ultimate Challenges should now be available.
▶Ultimate Challenges
Ultimate 1
Legendary Ryoma with Ame-no-Murakumo + Dragon Hawk.
Sequence:
- Masked Man
- Man in White
- eight normal/armored enemies
Use Wild Dancer mobility against the Masked Man, Gunman against the slower Man in White, and strip armor with melee before ranged cleanup in the final group.
Ultimate 2
Legendary Ryoma with Blade of the Shogun + Dragon Hawk.
Sequence:
- Komuso
- Thomas Glover
- ten British soldiers + bear
In the final encounter, remove the soldiers first, then work around the bear's flanks and rear.
Ultimate 3
Legendary Ryoma with Futsu-no-Mitama + Double Flash.
Sequence:
- Takeda
- Harada
- Ito
Wild Dancer works broadly. Gunman can safely chip Harada. Against Ito, stop attacking when his counter posture appears instead of committing to a long string.
Ultimate 4
Legendary Ryoma with Golden Sword + Dragon Hawk.
Sequence:
- Okita
- Nagakura
- Kondo
Okita's laugh telegraphs his dangerous jump/blast sequence. Circle Nagakura rather than trading directly into his forward pressure. Dodge sideways when Kondo creates distance for his rushing sequence.
Ultimate 1-4 provide some automatic recovery between fights. Do not rely on an exact percentage.
Ultimate 5
Legendary Ryoma with Dragon Slayer + Model 14.
Sequence:
- Yoshida
- Tokugawa
- Okada
- Katsura
- Saigo
- Akimoto
- Sasaki
- Takechi
There is no automatic between-fight health restoration in Ultimate 5 and no timer. Preserve health instead of racing.
Saigo forces the Brawler encounter. Dodge his charges and punish safely.
Akimoto is a low-threat round. Use it to avoid unnecessary damage rather than getting careless.
Preserve resources for Sasaki and Takechi.
Takechi is the final endurance test. His later phases can resist stagger and punish long strings. Wild Dancer mobility works well, while Swordsman guarding is a safer alternative against dangerous combos.
Legendary Ryoma has access to Asura Spirit, which spends Heat to restore health. No automatic between-round healing does not mean healing is impossible. Preserve Heat for Asura Spirit when your health becomes dangerous.
▶Ultimate Champion
Complete all 30 Ultimate Challenges.
The achievement unlocks when the final uncleared challenge is completed.
Afterward, back out normally so the completed mode state is preserved. The Phoenix Cannon also becomes available as a Completion Reward from Bakumatsu Bob in the main game.
▶Bakumatsu Premium Adventure: 100% Cleanup
▶Bonds, Shops, and Diligence Cleanup
Load Bakumatsu Premium Adventure using your clear data. This free-roam mode is the cleanest place to finish every remaining system without story pressure.
Start by finishing all bonds because they unlock menu items, recipes, activity access, and Diligence entries that can block several later categories. Use the Diligence Records friendship sections as your authoritative in-game checklist rather than relying on memory.
Memoirs remain recoverable here. If the Archive is short of 26/26, use the Memoirs manifest and the exact missing title rather than performing blind district sweeps.
▶Everybody Loves Ryoma
Complete every Bond. Shopkeeper bonds generally rise through repeated purchases or activity sessions; town bonds rise through repeated interactions, item deliveries, or short follow-up events.
When a bond seems stuck, leave the immediate area or enter and exit a nearby building to refresh the NPC. Finish both Diligence friendship categories completely. The achievement unlocks when the last Bond is completed.
▶The Gods Hath Been Humbled
Now finish every remaining Diligence Record. The system spans five categories, with many higher tiers hidden until earlier tiers are done. Use the in-game Diligence menu after every grind block so you stop immediately when a category is complete.
Prioritize the slow counters that cannot be finished instantly:
- Talk to people or animals 500 times.
- Reach 200 restaurant visits, obtain 100 pot items, pray at shrines or Jizo statues 100 times, and play minigames 100 times.
- Consume 400 food items and 200 medicinal items from inventory.
- Use palanquins 30 times and reach maximum reputation in Rakunai, Rakugai, Mukurogai, Fushimi, and Gion.
- Spend 500 ryo, travel 150 km on foot, sprint 50 km, draw from wells 50 times, deliver 20 Frequently Lost Courier packages, and chop 500 logs.
- Harvest 1,500 produce, including 50 ginseng and 100 each of cabbage, taro, tomato, and strawberry.
- Cook 100 times, fulfill 200 trade orders, catch 100 fish including 10 Bluefin Tuna and one qualifying big Bluefin Tuna, collect 30 eggs, interact with dogs 30 times and cats 30 times, and view all four Haruka scenes.
- Clear Battle Dungeons 100 times total.
- Defeat 500 street enemies and 20 Golden Sneaks.
- Finish 50 street fights with a Heat Action or Special Move on the last enemy.
- Break 50 improvised combat objects.
- Activate Trooper abilities 1,500 times.
For fishing, the cumulative chain ends at 100 fish, not 200. The fishing work should be ordered as: complete the 29-species set, finish 10 Bluefin Tuna, land the qualifying big tuna, then grind only whatever catches remain to 100.
The achievement unlocks when the final Diligence task completes. If your percentage appears short, inspect every category for a newly exposed final tier rather than repeating already completed tasks blindly.
▶Another Life Final Cleanup
Finish the Another Life section of the Completion List while closing the remaining Diligence counters. Grow every produce type at least once, catch every fish species, cook every meal, earn at least 100 ryo through trade orders, adopt all six pets, and view all four Haruka scenes.
For the Diligence plant totals, dedicate entire farm cycles to the required high-count crops. Ginseng is slow, so use fertilizer and large plots when grinding it. For the 200 trade orders, prioritize repeatable produce orders once the unique list starts cycling. Collect the chicken egg and interact with pets every time you enter the property until their Diligence totals are finished.
If you did not finish the 29-species sweep in Chapter 4, return to the Fishing Species Completion section and use the in-game Another Life fishing checklist to target only the missing species.
If World's Greatest Uncle did not unlock during the story, this is the time to finish trade revenue, read each debt letter, and pay the remaining 20 ryo installments at the Fushimi shrine.
▶Minigame Completion List
Now finish the stricter Completion List requirements. Save before gambling or expensive Courtesan sessions so a bad run does not consume unnecessary money.
- Singing: earn Preferred Performer or higher on all seven songs. Use Passionate Backup whenever a backup choice exists because Casual Backup's capped result cannot satisfy the required rank.
- Buyo Dance: earn First Class or Buyo God on all three songs at all four difficulties. Save Showstopper for dense patterns and practice the Geisha versions rather than mashing through them.
- Udon Shop: earn Divine rank in one shift. About 5 ryo of sales is the verified practical target. Pause while orders are visible, memorize the sequence, then unpause and input it.
- Courtesan games: clear Sake Showdown, Rock Paper Scissors, and Sensual Healing on each of the three standard difficulties. Super Asura Sensual Healing is not required. Use bombs in Sensual Healing rather than dying with unused resources.
- Chicken Racing: earn 10,000 race points cumulatively. Use normal betting and save management; the old refund exploit is patched.
- Cee-lo: earn 7,500 Wooden Tags cumulatively. Losses do not erase Completion List progress toward earned tags.
- Cho-han: earn 7,500 Wooden Tags cumulatively.
- Oicho-kabu: earn 7,500 Wooden Tags cumulatively.
- Koi-koi: earn 7,500 Wooden Tags cumulatively.
- Poker: earn 10,000 Wooden Tags cumulatively.
- Mahjong: finish a match with at least 35,000 points before the end-of-match bonus.
- Shogi: record three wins. Repeating an easy Challenge Match is sufficient if you do not want to learn advanced Shogi.
Finish any minigame-related bonds while doing these. Anna, the Utamaruya owner, Umai Udon owner, and Maijo-sensei all overlap directly with activity repetition.
▶Masters, Revelations, Heat Actions, and Level
Complete every master requirement before the final level breakthrough. Finish Komaki, Ginryu, and William Bradley's entire training lines. Earn three stars in every Scarecrow Chateau room. In Cannon Coaching, earn Gold on the first three standard difficulties for both Swordsman and Gunman; the Bonus difficulty is not required for the Completion List.
The Heat Action Completion List contains 60 distinct actions:
- 24 Brawler/general
- 13 Swordsman
- 11 Gunman
- 12 Wild Dancer
Do not blindly repeat all 60. Perform obvious Heat Actions naturally, finish all master and Revelation prerequisites, then use Completion List > Heat Actions to identify only the unchecked entries.
Before dedicated cleanup:
- attain all 8 Revelations
- purchase the remaining required Heat Action nodes
- carry an Orange
- carry an Umeboshi
- carry a Firework Ball
- have an Odachi available
- have a Cannon available
- unequip Tranquil Towel, because its effect prevents Heat from charging
▶Heat Action Cleanup Reference
Most routine entries can be executed directly from their in-game names and descriptions once their nodes are purchased. The following are the important setup exceptions.
Brawler/general environmentals
- Essence of Wall Smashing: grab an enemy beside a full-height wall and use Heavy Attack.
- Essence of Face Crushing: grab an enemy beside a waist-high wall or railing. The dock railing west of Teradaya is reliable.
- Essence of Finishing Kick: put an enemy face-down, stand near the head, and use Heavy Attack.
- Essence of Finishing Stomp: put an enemy face-up, stand near the head, and use Heavy Attack.
- Essence of Beatdown: hold a small one-handed environmental object and use Heavy Attack near an enemy.
- Essence of Crushing: hold a medium two-handed object such as a chair.
- Essence of Gravity: hold a large two-handed object such as a table or large bundle.
- Essence of Swinging: stand near the legs of a downed enemy.
- Essence of Throwing: grab an enemy beside a river edge or substantial drop.
- Essence of Staff: use a long wooden object or a Spear.
- Essence of Lagoon: deliberately use Swordsman, Gunman, or Wild Dancer, not Brawler, beside a river, ledge, or Battle Dungeon pit and trigger the general Heat Action without grabbing the enemy.
- Essence of Umeboshi: keep an Umeboshi in inventory. If the prompt does not appear, release Fighting Stance and remain close.
- Essence of Carrying Pole: use the two-parcels-on-a-pole prop west of Ebisu Pawn Rakunai.
- Essence of Scalding: fight beside the Uji Tea Parlor counter or another confirmed tea-shop setup.
- Essence of Mikan: purchase the ability and keep an Orange in inventory. If needed, release Fighting Stance to expose the prompt.
Brawler ability branches
- Mighty Strikes begins from a grab.
- Grounding Strikes is the Heavy Attack follow-up from Mighty Strikes.
- Dragon Strikes is the Left Stick rotation follow-up from Mighty Strikes.
- Mercurial Fortune requires letting an enemy break your grab first.
- Shot Stopper requires an enemy holding a firearm.
- Swordless Reversal requires timing Heavy Attack against a sword attack.
- Empty Hands is easiest against an unarmed/non-swordsman attacker.
Swordsman exceptions
Equip an Odachi for:
- Heavy Sword: Fly Swatter — enemy beside a wall
- Heavy Sword: Monkeyplay — counter a sword attack
- Heavy Sword: Windmill — at least three nearby enemies
Other important entries:
- Single Cuts: Fighting Stance, Quickstep toward the enemy, then Heavy Attack.
- Swirling Cuts: Heavy Attack follow-up from Single Cuts.
- Skewering Cuts: Left Stick rotation follow-up from Single Cuts.
- Scintillant Lead: use against a firearm enemy as they ready the shot.
- Ash from Withered Branches: turn your back to a melee attacker and use Heavy Attack as the rear attack arrives.
- Leaping Maelstrom: run toward three or more enemies and use Heavy Attack while still moving.
Gunman exceptions
- Shoving Shot: grab an enemy and use Heavy Attack.
- Fanning Shots: Heavy Attack follow-up from Shoving Shot.
- Lobbing Shot: Left Stick rotation follow-up from Shoving Shot.
- Three-Legged Mare: three or more enemies while holding Fighting Stance.
- Hornswoggling: turn your back to a sword enemy and use Heavy Attack as they attack from behind.
- Gravedigging: be knocked to the ground and use Heavy Attack while still down.
- Essence of Fireworks: equip a Cannon, carry a Firework Ball, have Knowledge of Cannons and the Heat Action node, then use Heavy Attack near an enemy.
Wild Dancer exceptions
- Rain of Steel and Fire: hold Fighting Stance near an enemy and use Heavy Attack.
- Squall of Steel and Fire: Heavy Attack follow-up from Rain of Steel and Fire.
- Typhoon of Steel and Fire: Left Stick rotation follow-up from Rain of Steel and Fire.
- Majestic Dispersal: four or more enemies while holding Fighting Stance.
- Mirage of Shimmering Heat: turn your back to a sword enemy and use Heavy Attack as the rear attack arrives.
- Essence of Winged Flight: run toward a still-distant enemy and use Heavy Attack before reaching normal melee range.
- Luxury and Splendor: build Heat to level V or higher, approach an enemy, and use Heavy Attack.
If an action appears to execute but remains unchecked, verify the exact Completion List name, correct style, purchased ability, Heat availability, and trigger condition, then repeat it and immediately recheck the list.
The first successful execution of each Revelation-derived Heat Action already counts in the Heat Action Completion List. Do not automatically purchase and repeat one unless its entry is actually blank.
▶Revelation Reveler
There are eight Revelations, two for each combat style. Obtaining the Book alone is insufficient; trigger the actual Revelation event.
- Brawler Throw — Essence of Reverse Throw: finish Komaki's training for Book of Revelations: Throw. Repeatedly parry in Brawler and activate the close parry Revelation prompt.
- Brawler Strike — Essence of Grand Bruising: clear Scarecrow Chateau Advanced Room 10 for Book of Revelations: Strike. Trigger War Cry Counter with a Brawler parry, preserve the War Cry state, create distance, target another enemy, and activate the distant Heat prompt. If Reverse Throw keeps firing, you are acting too close or too early.
- Swordsman Flash — Gleaming Scythe: finish Ginryu's training for Book of Revelations: Flash. Repeatedly execute Splendid Skill: Fair Weather successfully and activate the Revelation prompt after the successful knockback.
- Swordsman Smash — Essence of Mincemeat: defeat the eighth Wanted Man for Book of Revelations: Smash. Use Summer Rainfall to break a guarding enemy's guard, then activate the prompt while they reel.
- Gunman Spree — Essence of Oh-Be-Joyful: finish William Bradley's training for Book of Revelations: Spree. Repeatedly use Jumping Shots, then run toward an enemy and activate the Revelation prompt.
- Gunman Gust — Essence of Old Scratch: exchange five Carved Wooden Bears at Unyuan for Book of Revelations: Gust. Repeatedly use Texas Two-Step; on the trigger attempt Quickstep forward, use the Light Attack tackle, then Heavy Attack.
- Wild Dancer Frenzy — The Bloody Wheel: finish Ginryu's training for Book of Revelations: Frenzy. Repeatedly use Phoenix Frenzy; on the successful sequence press Grab twice, then activate Heavy Attack after the second sword strike and before the gunfire.
- Wild Dancer Evasion — Dance of Mourning: clear Scarecrow Chateau Hell Room 10 for Book of Revelations: Evasion. Repeatedly evade actual sword attacks until the prompt appears.
The first successful Revelation cinematic also registers its corresponding Heat Action before you purchase the newly unlocked node. The achievement unlocks after the eighth Revelation has actually been attained.
▶Limit Breaker
Complete all four style breakthroughs, then reach character Level 99. A style breakthrough requires that style to reach Level 25 and have every ability slot on its first grid filled; return to that style's trainer and win the breakthrough fight to raise its style cap to 50. Because locked abilities must be learned before the grid can be filled, finish the relevant master training and Revelations first.
After all four style breakthroughs are complete and Ryoma is Level 99, return to Komaki. He will arrange the final character breakthrough against Komaki, Ginryu, and William Bradley at the same time. Win that fight. The achievement unlocks when the character breakthrough completes and Ryoma's overall level limit is broken.
The current patched build fixes the historical condition that could prevent Level 99 from being reached.
▶Battle Dungeons, Troopers, and Arena Completion
Now finish every unique Battle Dungeon. There are 10 Bandits' Cave missions, 10 Bandits' Mine missions, and 20 Sanada Stronghold missions. Dungeon completion also supplies money, materials, sealed equipment, experience, Troopers, and a huge share of the 100-clear and 1,500-Trooper-ability Diligence grinds.
Use the mission reward and item-pool display to target materials you still need rather than repeating one map blindly. For late farming, a strong Gunman build is efficient. The accessibility setting that simplifies combo attacks can reduce fatigue when using rapid-fire Gunman attacks during long dungeon grinds.
Do not sell Seal-bearing drops blindly. Ordinary removable Seals can be recovered by dismantling the item and may save substantial smithing RNG later.
▶Bandit Wrangler
Clear all 10 Bandits' Mine missions. The achievement unlocks on the final Mine mission clear.
▶Sanada Takedown
Clear all 20 Sanada Stronghold missions. The achievement unlocks on the final Stronghold mission clear.
If Drop and Give Me 100 is still locked afterward, stop spending time on duplicate dungeon recruits and deliberately hunt unique hooded street enemies or use Enlistment while checking the Trooper Registry after each new card.
For Arena Completion List progress, defeat every opponent in the Knockout Match roster. The Hundred Man Beatdown is not required for Taskmaster. If a final opponent set is still locked, finish the remaining Wanted Men and master-training prerequisites first.
▶Completion List and Smithing Endgame
The Completion List has ten major sections: Substories, Minigames, Another Life, Meals, Heat Actions, Equipment, Masters, Wanted Men, Battle Dungeons, and Arena.
By this point, Equipment should be the major remaining time sink.
The Equipment section contains two different obligations:
- 161 smithable equipment results
- 45 distinct required non-Kiwami Seal uses
That creates 206 Equipment-category completion obligations, but it does not mean you must manufacture 206 pieces of gear.
The smithing total is:
- 116 weapons
- 45 armor pieces
- 161 total smithable results
Possessing an item from a drop, reward, exchange, or shop does not replace smithing credit where the Completion List expects that item to be crafted.
For Meals, eat every menu item, not merely one item per restaurant. Finish restaurant bonds first because Uji Tea Parlor and Hanamaru Udon expose additional menu items through friendship progress. Visit Shippoku Momokawa at noon for its lunch-only item.
For Wanted Men, clear every mission shown by the Tachibanagumi. For Masters, confirm every requirement is checked. For Battle Dungeons and Arena, verify the Completion List itself rather than assuming an achievement means the whole category is done.

The seven Dead-Eyed Man transformations are:
- Yaksha Blade → Skink Lizard
- Skink Lizard → Muramasa
- The Radish → Blossoming Bud
- Worn Magical Sword → Last of the Dragons
- Jumbo Saw → Nenekiri-maru
- Peashooter → Cuckoo
- Chopstick Gun → Spring in Full Bloom
For Blossoming Bud, carry all 20 Doburoku on Ryoma. Storage does not satisfy the transformation check.
For Worn Pistol, progress William Bradley's Unyuan exchange far enough to trade five Carved Wooden Bears for Book of Revelations: Gust. The later exchange then offers Worn Pistol for 20 Aquamarines. Use it for Rusted Pistol → Dragon Hawk.
For Worn Magical Sword, full Equipment completion is hard-gated behind Amon:
- Clear all 40 Battle Dungeons.
- Complete all 72 substories.
- Complete the first Amon encounter through the final Battle Dungeon sequence.
- Follow the Amon chain and return for the second duel at Kiyomizu Temple at night.
- Defeat Amon and receive Worn Magical Sword.
- Defeat 100 enemies while Worn Magical Sword remains equipped.
- Take it and the required materials to the Dead-Eyed Man for Last of the Dragons.
Wild Dancer gun kills still count toward the 100 kills while Worn Magical Sword is equipped.
▶Required Seal Uses
Successfully use each of these 45 distinct non-Kiwami Seals at least once. Shape matters, so Sphere and Square versions of the same effect are different Completion List entries.

Sphere Seal: Kiwami and Square Seal: Kiwami are not part of the 45 required Completion List Seals.
When farming or crafting:
- Raise Kurogane to Level 20 before the expensive final phase when practical.
- Preserve equipment carrying removable Seals you still need.
- Use the post-1.04 direct dungeon drops instead of forcing old pre-patch RNG routes where possible.
- Secure Sphere: Repentance / Change of Heart deliberately from Battle Dungeon 3-4 before leaving all rare-Seal acquisition to generic cleanup.
- Use the in-game Battle Dungeon obtainable-item table for ordinary material targeting.
- Battle Dungeon 3-20 is an efficient late money/material farm.
- After Last of the Dragons has received smithing credit, dismantling it can return four Dragon Whiskers and four Dragon Fangs for further late crafting.
Seal appearance during equipment crafting is seeded. If you find a useful Seal generation at a known craft position, you can reload, reproduce the preceding sequence with the same hammer sequence, and redirect the seeded occurrence onto an equipment family capable of generating the missing Seal. A no-slot craft such as Keen Blade can be used to alter the generation sequence when probing.
Seal attachment success uses a different seeded process.
If a valuable Seal attachment fails:
- Reload the save from before the failed attempt.
- Successfully attach a different disposable Seal to another item.
- Save.
- Retry the valuable Seal.
Do not rely on crafting an unrelated weapon to advance the failed attachment-success roll.
▶Bring Down the Hammer
The displayed description says to enhance equipment 100 times. Count 100 successful Seal attachments, not failed attempts.
The 45 distinct Seal uses required for Taskmaster contribute to the same cumulative work. If you use each required Seal exactly once, no more than 55 additional successful placements remain.
Safest route:
- Raise Kurogane to Level 20 or as high as practical before rare placements.
- Finish the 161 smithable results.
- Recover useful removable Seals from retained equipment.
- Successfully use all 45 required non-Kiwami Seal identities.
- Continue with cheap open-slot equipment and spare low-value Seals until the achievement unlocks.
Make a manual save before consuming a rare Seal. If an attachment fails, reload and advance the attachment-success state with another successful Seal placement before retrying.
Isolated players have reported the achievement not unlocking when they believed they had passed 100 attempts. No alternative threshold or verified reset procedure is established. Count successful placements only and continue making obvious fresh successful enhancements on the same save until it unlocks.
▶Taskmaster
Taskmaster65G
Bring the Completion List to 100%. Before expecting the achievement, verify all ten sections individually:
- All 72 Substories complete.
- All Minigame completion targets complete.
- Another Life fully complete, including all 29 caught fish species.
- Every restaurant menu item eaten.
- All 60 Heat Actions performed.
- All 161 smithable equipment results crafted and all 45 required non-Kiwami Seals successfully used.
- Every master requirement complete.
- Every Wanted Men mission complete.
- Every Battle Dungeon complete.
- Every required Arena opponent defeated.
For the major specialist systems:
- Memoirs: verify 26/26 in Bakumatsu Archives and all Satow/substory consequences complete.
- Fishing: verify all 29 species in the Completion List.
- Heat Actions: use Completion List > Heat Actions and clear only unchecked entries after all 8 Revelations and master locks are finished.
- Equipment: verify 161 smithing results plus 45 distinct required Seal uses. Do not interpret the resulting 206 obligations as 206 pieces of equipment.
The achievement unlocks when the Completion List itself reaches 100%. If the percentage is stuck, inspect the individual category page for a single unchecked entry instead of repeating completed activities.
