Completion Plan

What 100% Requires

NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black has 38 Xbox achievements worth 1,000 Gamerscore. Xbox Series X|S and Windows use the same Xbox Play Anywhere achievement list. There are no DLC or title-update achievements in this list.

All achievements are offline and single-player. Tag Missions use an AI-controlled partner in this version; there is no online co-op requirement.

As of 2026-09-20:

  • CURRENTLY CONFIRMED UNOBTAINABLE: None.
  • CURRENTLY CONFIRMED DISCONTINUED: None.
  • PATCHED / NO LONGER A CURRENT ISSUE: the launch-era progression blockers are fixed on the current build (1.0.7.0).

The minimum practical completion is four full Story clears plus four full Chapter Challenge rank passes, followed by the 35 Tag Missions and any character-kill cleanup. Difficulty achievements do not stack, and the four Chapter Challenge rank achievements do not stack either.

Use this order:

  1. Path of the Acolyte Story: collect all 30 Crystal Skulls, obtain and perform every technique, and clear the miscellaneous achievements.
  2. Path of the Warrior Story.
  3. Path of the Mentor Story.
  4. Path of the Master Ninja Story.
  5. Chapter Challenge on Acolyte, Warrior, Mentor, and Master Ninja, earning MASTER NINJA rank in every chapter on each difficulty.
  6. Clear all 35 Tag Missions.
  7. Finish any remaining 1,000-kill achievements for Ryu, Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel.

Hero, Acolyte, Warrior, and Mentor are available from the start. Start on Acolyte rather than Hero. Hero also satisfies the first clear achievement, but Acolyte teaches the combat systems you will need later without the automatic low-health defense of Hero.

There are no permanently missable achievements currently established for this Xbox list, but several technique scrolls and Crystal Skulls are easy to walk past inside their chapters. Crystal Skulls carry across playthroughs, and a skull picked up in Chapter Challenge also counts, and the pause menu shows your total skull count, but not which individual skulls you have. Each technique achievement requires collecting that chapter's scroll and then performing the move; confirm every technique pop during the Acolyte Story. It is not established whether scrolls can be collected in Chapter Challenge, which starts with all equipment unlocked, so recover a missed technique on your next required Story run by collecting the scroll in the same chapter on that file and performing it. Following the first-run route avoids unnecessary hunting later.

Master Ninja unlocks after your first Story clear. New Game+ resets weapons and Ninpo to level 1 and only starts on a difficulty you have already cleared; it does not let you carry a cleared Acolyte file into Warrior, Mentor, or Master Ninja. It therefore does not remove any required difficulty clear.

For combat, learn three habits immediately: defend and use Reverse/Furious Wind instead of standing still, finish delimbed enemies with Obliteration Techniques, and turn loose Essence into fast Ultimate Techniques with Ultimate Guidance. Those skills matter far more than raw button speed once Mentor and Master Ninja begin.

The Collectibles section at the end of this guide has a checklist for all 30 Crystal Skulls and all 35 Tag Missions, because the game tracks neither individually.

First Story Clear — Path of the Acolyte

Chapter 1 — Sky City Tokyo

Collectibles 2 collectibles
  • Chapter 1 — rooftop across the gap — From the shrine/balcony area, jump across to the adjacent rooftop before dropping to the lower fight.

  • Chapter 1 — archer bridge — On the elevated wooden bridge beside the first archers in the garden; reach it with the tree wall-run.

This chapter contains two Crystal Skulls and most of the basic technique achievements. Inspect every dead ninja and open the technique chests as you pass them. Do not rush through the traversal tutorials; the game places several achievement scrolls directly around them. Confirm each technique achievement pops before moving on; a missed one is recovered on a later Story run by collecting the same scroll on that file.

Cast No Shadow

After the first save point and the next indoor fights, you reach the first wall-run gap. Drop into the small lower section of the gap and open the chest containing The Technique of Shadowless Footsteps. Climb back up and wall-run across the gap. The achievement unlocks when you perform the wall run after obtaining the scroll.

Certain Death

Immediately after that first wall-run section, inspect the dead ninja on the far side for The Obliteration Technique. Injure one of the nearby ninjas until a limb is severed, move close, and press Y to execute the Obliteration Technique. The achievement unlocks on the successful execution.

Like the Wind

Open the chest beside the same early corpse for The Reverse Wind Technique. With the default Xbox controls, hold LB and flick the left stick in a direction to dodge. The achievement unlocks as soon as the post-scroll Reverse Wind is performed.

Continue to the shrine/balcony area. Before dropping to the lower fight, jump across to the adjacent rooftop for Crystal Skull 1.

Fiery Roar

After dropping from the Crystal Skull 1 area and clearing the enemies below, continue through the building and open the technique chest on the upper route for The Art of the Inferno. Equip it and cast Ninpo with Y+B when you have Ki. The next enemies are a convenient test group. The achievement unlocks when the Ninpo is performed after collecting the scroll.

Need Not a Ladder

Shortly after the Inferno pickup, the next save point has a dead ninja nearby carrying The Flying Bird Technique. Take it, then use the narrow vertical shaft beside the save point to alternate wall jumps upward. This traversal is required to continue and triggers the achievement after the scroll is obtained.

In the garden beyond, keep progressing until the first archer section. Crystal Skull 2 is on the elevated wooden bridge/balcony beside those archers; use the nearby tree/wall-jump route to reach it before moving on. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 2.

Like a Swallow

Later, at the save point followed by a ladder to the upper walkway, climb up and inspect the dead ninja on the left route for The Flying Swallow Technique. In the next combat square, equip the Dragon Sword, jump toward an enemy, keep the left stick aimed toward the target, and press Y. Ryu's forward aerial slash must connect after you have the scroll.

Strong Heart

After the large combat area that opens the side room containing the Lunar Staff, continue down the short stairs and inspect the corpse at the bottom for The Ultimate Technique. On the ground, hold Y until Ryu glows with the charge and release near an enemy. The charge has two stages, blue then red; holding to the full red charge is the safe way to make sure it counts.

The Last Rites

Continue over the following bridge and through the doorway with another dead ninja. Take The Technique of Ultimate Guidance. In the next garden fight, kill an enemy and leave its Essence floating, then hold Y near the loose Essence so Ryu absorbs it and jumps straight into an Ultimate Technique charge. Release the attack. The achievement unlocks when the Essence-assisted charge is successfully used after obtaining the scroll.

The Blue Gale

Near the later metal-catwalk section, drop through the broken railing to the enclosed concrete/glass path and inspect the nearby dead ninja for The Furious Wind Technique. Let an enemy strike your guard, then while still blocking flick the left stick to evade. The blue afterimage confirms a Furious Wind rather than a normal Reverse Wind.

Sky City Tokyo

Finish the chapter and defeat its boss. This unlocks when Chapter 1 is successfully completed.

From this point onward, every Ryu kill contributes to Dragon Ninja. Do not grind it now; four Story clears and four Chapter Challenge passes give Ryu far more than enough natural opportunities.

Chapter 2

Collectibles 2 collectibles
  • Chapter 2 — riverbed under the bridge — Dive beneath the large wooden bridge at the water-running canal.

  • Chapter 2 — shelf behind the paper screens — In the golden dragon statue room, go to the upper-right balcony and slash open the sliding screens to reach the shelf.

This chapter contains Crystal Skulls 3 and 4 plus three technique achievements.

At the canal where the game teaches water running, dive beneath the large wooden bridge and take Crystal Skull 3 from the riverbed before leaving the water.

Cool and Calm

After crossing the canal and following the narrow path past the dogs, you reach an enclosed square with the first save point and a dead ninja. Take The Counter Attack Technique. Hold LB and press X or Y just as an enemy's strike reaches your guard. The achievement unlocks on a successful post-scroll counter.

Izuna Drop

After the small room where you collect the Falcon's Talons and clear its ambush, leave the building and defeat the large ninja/warlock group at the giant doorway. When the doorway opens, take The Izuna Drop Technique scroll before climbing the Castle Gate stairway. The move itself can be executed before the scroll, and no weapon level is required in this version, but the achievement cannot unlock until the scroll has been collected. Against a launchable enemy, X, Y launches the target and you continue attacking in the air to finish the throw; the full Dragon Sword string is X, Y, X, X, X, Y. The Lunar Staff also works, with X, Y, X, X, Y. The achievement unlocks when the completed throw lands after the scroll is yours.

Throat Cutting Wind

On the castle approach, after the cave and the wall-jump climb, enter the structure at the top and inspect the corpse near the chest for The Guillotine Throw Technique. Jump close to an enemy and press A+X with the default Xbox layout to perform the throw. It unlocks as soon as the post-scroll Guillotine Throw succeeds.

Later, in the room dominated by the large golden dragon statue, reach the upper-right balcony and slash open the sliding paper screens to enter the adjoining room. Crystal Skull 4 is on a shelf inside. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 4. Finish the chapter normally.

Chapter 3

Collectibles 2 collectibles
  • Chapter 3 — top of the metal staircase — Near the start, climb the metal staircase all the way up.

  • Chapter 3 — behind the giant fan — Deeper underground, past the giant fan.

This chapter contains Crystal Skulls 5 and 6 and three easy-to-miss technique pickups.

Near the start, climb the metal staircase all the way up for Crystal Skull 5 before continuing along the main route.

Flame Phoenix Blessings

After the second save point and the street fights, follow the street to the chest containing The Art of the Flame Phoenix before dropping into the newly opened pit. Equip it and cast the Ninpo once. The achievement unlocks when the spell is performed after collecting it.

Running Through

In the sewer section, you reach a traversal gap involving a wall run/pole swing with archers ahead. You cannot cross it cleanly; falling into the water below is part of the route. In the water area, inspect the corpse at the bottom of the destroyed staircase for The Technique of Unrivaled Soaring, then use the newly taught wall-run traversal to climb back out.

Deeper underground, pass the giant fan and check behind it for Crystal Skull 6. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 6.

Passing the Void

Toward the end of the chapter, after the cave fight with enemies on lower and upper levels, climb the stone ledges to the small dead end and inspect the corpse for The Technique of the Invisible Path. Use the newly taught chained wall-run route across the facing walls to continue. The achievement unlocks once the technique is performed after obtaining the scroll.

Finish the chapter.

Chapter 4 — A Captive Goddess

Collectibles 3 collectibles
  • Chapter 4 — alley balcony — Near the second save point, enter the alley and climb to the balcony.

  • Chapter 4 — overpass ledge — Climb the ladder near that save, cross the bridge, go through the opening in the right-side blockade, and check the far platform.

  • Chapter 4 — Statue of Liberty base rafters — In the elevator and save room inside the statue base, hop the railing from the back-corner stairs onto the rafters/pipe and follow them to the corner.

This chapter contains Crystal Skulls 7, 8, and 9.

Ruthless Vacuum Wave

Very early in the subway/tunnel section, open the technique chest sitting directly along the route for The Art of the Wind Blades. Equip it and cast it once with Y+B. The achievement unlocks on the first post-pickup cast.

Around the second save point, enter the nearby alley and climb to the balcony for Crystal Skull 7. Climb the ladder near that save, cross the bridge, pass through the opening in the right-side blockade, and check the platform on the far side for Crystal Skull 8. Near the end of the chapter, inside the base of the Statue of Liberty, find the small room with the elevator and save point. From the stairs in the back corner, hop over the railing onto the rafters/industrial pipe and follow them to the corner for Crystal Skull 9. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 9.

A Captive Goddess

Complete Chapter 4. The achievement unlocks at the successful chapter clear.

Chapter 5

This is Momiji's story chapter and contains no Crystal Skulls. Play normally and kill everything convenient rather than sprinting past encounters; these kills count toward Dragon Shrine Maiden, but one chapter is nowhere near 1,000, so there is no reason to grind here yet.

Chapter 6

Collectibles 3 collectibles
  • Chapter 6 — boat near the bridge — Early in the canal area, on the boat near the bridge.

  • Chapter 6 — table outside the save-point door — Loot the corpse near the first save point to open the door, then go outside.

  • Chapter 6 — underwater alcove in the dead-end canal — Before the first broken grate, take the right-hand dead-end canal and dive into the alcove beneath the bridge.

This chapter contains Crystal Skulls 10, 11, and 12 plus the last Ninpo achievement.

Early in the canal area, check the boat near the bridge for Crystal Skull 10. Around the first save point, loot the nearby corpse to open the door, then go outside; Crystal Skull 11 is on a table. Later, before swimming through the first broken grate (the main path), take the right-hand dead-end canal instead and dive into the underwater alcove beneath the bridge; Crystal Skull 12 is in its back corner. Return and continue through the grate. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 12.

Unstable Gravity

After the watery canal/gondola section, reach the building with a save point and clear its enemies. Go upstairs before leaving and open the chest containing The Art of the Piercing Void. Equip it and cast the Ninpo once. The achievement unlocks on that post-pickup cast.

Finish the chapter.

Chapter 7

Collectibles 3 collectibles
  • Chapter 7 — ledge below the pillar-top roof — Near the start, wall-jump up the pillars, turn toward the Muramasa statue, and check under the wreckage on the lower ledge.

  • Chapter 7 — under the rampart cutter — On the ramparts near the save point, cut the rope on the cutter mechanism.

  • Chapter 7 — library bookcase — Break or search the bookcase in the library.

This chapter contains Crystal Skulls 13, 14, and 15.

Near the start, wall-jump up the pillars to the top of the structure, then turn around toward the Muramasa statue: Crystal Skull 13 sits under some wreckage on a lower ledge just below the roof peak, so look down rather than expecting it on the top itself. On the castle ramparts near the save point, cut the rope on the cutter mechanism to expose Crystal Skull 14. In the library, break/search the bookcase concealing Crystal Skull 15 before leaving the room. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 15.

Chain of 100 Slashes

This requires a 100-hit combo with any weapon, in any mode. It is not established exactly what resets the counter, so avoid getting hit and keep the hits continuous. The first opportunity comes before the giant skeleton boss, in the area full of small crawling bone spiders: keep throwing shuriken at them to build the chain without letting it drop. If that falls short, the later fallback is the werewolf wave that follows Volf at the end of this chapter; the game equips Volf's Eclipse Scythe for that phase, so use it and keep attacking between targets without breaking the chain. Other options: sever a Claw Ninja's leg so it is crawling, then pelt it with shuriken without executing it. Do not use basic ninjas for this, because a basic ninja that loses a limb self-destructs with an explosive knife. Spraying a crowd with Rachel's machine gun in Chapter 8 or an Acolyte Tag Mission is another option to try. The achievement unlocks the moment the live combo counter reaches 100.

The Lycanthropes' Castle

Complete Chapter 7. The achievement unlocks at the chapter clear.

Chapter 8

This is Rachel's story chapter and contains no Crystal Skulls. Kill the enemies you naturally encounter to bank progress toward Fiend Hunter. If Chain of 100 Slashes has not unlocked yet, Rachel's machine gun on a group here is another option to try. Do not replay the chapter for kills yet; Tag Missions give Rachel a much faster cleanup method later.

Chapter 9

Collectibles 2 collectibles
  • Chapter 9 — airship control room console — Break the console in the control room.

  • Chapter 9 — rubble hallway after the hatch — Near the chapter's end, open the floor hatch by the save point and check the rubble in the next hallway.

This chapter contains Crystal Skulls 16 and 17.

In the airship control room, break the console concealing Crystal Skull 16. Near the end of the chapter, use the save point, open the floor hatch, leave the room, and check the rubble in the following hallway for Crystal Skull 17. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 17.

Finish the chapter.

Chapter 10 — Submit, or Die!

Collectibles 4 collectibles
  • Chapter 10 — mined street — Early in the snowy section, at the base of the rocket-soldier building, surrounded by mines.

  • Chapter 10 — alcove below the Bell Room — Descend the stairs from the church Bell Room.

  • Chapter 10 — train compartment — Kill everyone on the station platform so the train opens, then search its compartments.

  • Chapter 10 — clocktower gear — On the large gears in the clocktower.

This chapter contains four Crystal Skulls, the largest single-chapter total.

Take Crystal Skull 18 early in the snowy section outside the building, in the street at the base of the rocket-soldier building; it is surrounded by mines, so approach carefully. In the church Bell Room, descend the stairs and check the nearby alcove for Crystal Skull 19. At the train station, defeat every enemy on the platform so the waiting train opens, then enter the train and take Crystal Skull 20 from a compartment. In the clocktower, climb the large gears and collect Crystal Skull 21 before leaving the machinery section. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 21.

Submit, or Die!

Complete Chapter 10. The achievement unlocks at the successful chapter clear.

Chapter 11

This is Ayane's story chapter and contains no Crystal Skulls. Kill the enemies along the required route for natural Kunoichi progress, but save any deliberate grind for Tag Missions after the campaign.

Chapter 12

Collectibles 4 collectibles
  • Chapter 12 — watchtower base — At the start, near the base of the watchtower.

  • Chapter 12 — platform off the rope — From the jungle rope, transfer to the branches on the right and jump to the nearby platform.

  • Chapter 12 — muddy cave corner — After the underground cave save point, the back-right edge of the muddy area.

  • Chapter 12 — opposite riverbank — Near the end, where the water ends, on the opposite bank.

This chapter contains Crystal Skulls 22 through 25.

At the beginning, check near the base of the watchtower for Crystal Skull 22. In the jungle, when you reach the rope zipline, use the route that lets you transfer toward the branches on the right and jump to the nearby platform for Crystal Skull 23. After the save point in the underground cave, clear the enemies and search the back-right edge of the muddy area for Crystal Skull 24. Near the end, after the Ryu cutscene and the following fight, go to where the water ends and inspect the opposite riverbank for Crystal Skull 25. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 25.

Finish the chapter.

Chapter 13 — The Temple of Sacrifice

Collectibles 2 collectibles
  • Chapter 13 — platform above the acid pit — After the first acid-pit fight, wall-jump to the upper platform.

  • Chapter 13 — left of the stone staircase — Check the left side before climbing the tall stone staircase.

This chapter contains Crystal Skulls 26 and 27.

After the first acid-pit fight, use the wall-jump route to the upper platform and collect Crystal Skull 26. Later, at the tall stone staircase, check the left side before committing to the climb for Crystal Skull 27. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 27.

The Temple of Sacrifice

Complete Chapter 13. The achievement unlocks at the chapter clear.

Chapter 14

Collectibles 3 collectibles
  • Chapter 14 — behind the hut in the right alley — After the ornate gate into the village, take the alley on the right.

  • Chapter 14 — wooden shrine in the grass field — After Save Point 3, swim through the underwater cave to the grass field and break open the shrine on the right.

  • Chapter 14 — valley mineshaft — At the rope across the valley before the fourth save point, drop into the valley and take the mineshaft at the back.

This chapter contains the final three Crystal Skulls.

After crossing the ornate gate into the village area, enter the alley on the right and search behind the hut for Crystal Skull 28. After Save Point 3, dive into the pool and swim through the underwater cave to surface in the tall-grass field. Clear the enemies, then attack the wooden shrine on the right to break its doors open and take Crystal Skull 29.

Later, at the rope that crosses the valley just before the dragon statue and the fourth save point, do not cross. Hang from the rope and drop into the valley, kill the enemies that spawn, then enter the small mineshaft at the back of the valley and take Crystal Skull 30 at its dead end. Climb back out of the valley to continue. Skull checkpoint: the pause menu's Crystal Skull total should now read 30.

Crystal Skull

If the previous 29 were collected, this unlocks when Crystal Skull 30 is picked up. There are 30 total: two in Chapter 1, two in Chapter 2, two in Chapter 3, three in Chapter 4, three in Chapter 6, three in Chapter 7, two in Chapter 9, four in Chapter 10, four in Chapter 12, two in Chapter 13, and three in Chapter 14. Chapters 5, 8, 11, 15, 16, and 17 contain none.

If it does not unlock here, check the pause menu's skull total first. If it reads 30, fully close and relaunch the game and recheck the achievement before hunting for anything. If it reads less than 30, do not start a blind full-game search. The pause menu shows the total but not which skulls you have, so compare against the checkpoint totals after each chapter (2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 17, 21, 25, 27, 30) to find the first chapter where you fell short. Crystal Skull progress carries across playthroughs and a skull picked up in Chapter Challenge also counts, so use the chapter distribution above to identify the likely chapter, then collect the missed skull during the Warrior Story run or during the Acolyte Chapter Challenge pass, which replays every chapter on its own anyway.

Chapter 15

There are no remaining achievement collectibles or technique scrolls. Continue the story. On Acolyte, use this stretch to practice conservative defense and Essence chaining rather than rushing, because the same late-game fights become much less forgiving on Mentor and Master Ninja.

Chapter 16

Continue normally. Preserve healing and Ki entering boss sequences and keep using Obliteration Techniques on delimbed normal enemies rather than leaving them alive and dangerous.

Chapter 17 — Poisoned Blood

Finish the final boss sequence and credits on Acolyte.

Trial of the Acolyte

This unlocks when the game is cleared on Hero Play Style or Path of the Acolyte. Because this route started on Acolyte, it unlocks with the Chapter 17 clear.

Remaining Story Difficulties

Path of the Warrior

Start a fresh Story game on Warrior and clear all 17 chapters. Difficulty-clear achievements do not stack, so this run cannot be replaced by Mentor or Master Ninja.

Do not waste time recollecting Crystal Skulls you already have. Use the run to tighten your defensive movement, on-landing Ultimate Techniques, Izuna Drops on launchable enemies, and immediate Obliteration Techniques after delimbs.

Awakening of the Warrior

Unlocks when Chapter 17 is cleared on Path of the Warrior.

Path of the Mentor

Clear Story again on Mentor. Enemy pressure and projectile spam become much more serious here. Prioritize ranged attackers and mages, create delimbs quickly, and convert the resulting Essence into Ultimate Techniques rather than trying to win every crowd with long ground strings.

Save Ninpo and healing for forced encounters and bosses. The goal is the clear, not a rank, so there is no reward for taking unnecessary optional fights on this Story run.

Beginning of Mentoring

Unlocks when Chapter 17 is cleared on Path of the Mentor.

Path of the Master Ninja

Master Ninja is available after any Story clear, but doing it last is the practical route because Warrior and Mentor teach the enemy behavior you need.

Treat every fight as space control. Block first, use Furious Wind to escape guard pressure, isolate dangerous enemies, and use short high-value attacks rather than long unsafe strings. Ultimate Guidance is one of the most important systems in the game: kill or delimb one enemy, leave the Essence floating, then turn it into the next Ultimate Technique. Ninpo is a survival resource as much as damage; do not hoard it through a fight you are about to lose.

Older advice for Chapters 8, 11, 13, and 14 may be out of date: the current build lowered enemy health in Chapters 8 and 11 and raised enemy counts in Chapters 13 and 14.

Step towards Ninja Mastery

Unlocks when Chapter 17 is cleared on Path of the Master Ninja. Clearing Master Ninja Story is normally the hardest sustained campaign requirement in the list.

Chapter Challenge — Four MASTER NINJA Rank Sets

How Chapter Challenge Scoring Works

Chapter Challenge lets you replay completed chapters independently and cannot advance from one chapter into the next. Difficulty is selected per attempt. Chapter Challenge difficulties are reported to unlock with Story clears, and Master Ninja difficulty in Chapter Challenge needs a Master Ninja Story clear. That is why this guide finishes all four Story difficulties first.

Every chapter starts with all weapons and Ninpo unlocked and fully upgraded, but with 0 Essence, and the shop is expensive. Save points work as in the Story, so you can quit and resume a chapter later. Rank is shown on the results screen at the end of each chapter, which is your checkpoint for every one of the 68 results (17 chapters on each of four difficulties).

The official Karma system bases the final Player Rank on kills, game time, obtained Essence, and remaining Ki, with additional bonuses from Ultimate Techniques, Obliteration Techniques, instant kills, consecutive kills, and combos. In practice, kills are the factor that decides the rank. Dying and using items carry no reported penalty, and the time allowance is generous as long as you do not sit idle. No score thresholds are published, so the reliable rule is behavioral rather than numerical:

  • Trigger and kill every enemy group, including enemies that come out of boxes and chests, every add a boss summons, and anything that spawns after a failed jump or wall run or in a side room.
  • Move briskly between encounters, and use Ultimate and Obliteration Techniques naturally.
  • Do not backtrack a long way from fixed-position enemies such as archers and rocket soldiers before killing them; they may despawn.
  • Where practical, enter the chapter's last fight with Ki refilled (a mushroom or a Talisman of Rebirth) and land the final blow with it full.

Chapters with 100 or more enemies tolerate a few misses, but skipping a whole notable group can still cost the rank. The low-enemy chapters, especially the character chapters 5, 8, and 11 plus Chapter 17, have no slack: kill every enemy, take Ultimate and Obliteration Techniques, and finish with Ki refilled.

Chapter-specific rank notes:

  • Chapter 12: kill every enemy in the river and lake sections, including the fish and eels. Skipping the eels here has cost the rank.
  • Chapter 13: the current build has a raised enemy count, mainly on the great staircase. The staircase is a finite series of waves; kill every earlier enemy, including delimbed ones, or the final wave may not appear. Before the staircase, striking the large circular stone releases King Quator, an optional caged dragon boss. Whether he is needed for MASTER NINJA is unverified: reports conflict, with some players ranking without him and achievement solutions telling you to kill him. Defeat him on your first rank attempt whenever practical. There is reportedly no checkpoint after his fight, so a staircase death sends you back before him; on retries you may skip him to save time, accepting that the rank could fall short.
  • Chapter 14: the enemy count is also raised, especially in the opening waves. These waves trigger as you advance, so trigger them one at a time and fall back to fight them. A cutaway to the Muramasa statue while enemies are still alive does not void the rank.
  • Chapter 17: Dagra Dai summons Van Gelf adds in at least three waves (reported as three or four: one at the start, one around half health, and one around a quarter). Every one of them must die. Kill the fish-like enemies on the bridge, and open every box and chest in the chapter and kill anything that comes out. Buy Ki and healing items at the shop before Dagra Dai, and save a full Ki bar for the Archfiend, the chapter's last fight.

If a chapter ends one rank short (a lower rank such as Greater Ninja), check these in order before replaying it:

  1. Were all box and chest enemies opened and killed?
  2. Were all boss add waves killed?
  3. Were optional encounters killed, such as side rooms, spawns after failed jumps, the Chapter 12 river and lake, or King Quator in Chapter 13 if you skipped him?
  4. Did archers or rocket soldiers despawn because you backtracked far from them?
  5. Did the chapter drag on, or did you leave the game idle?
  6. In a low-enemy chapter, was Ki empty at the end, or did you use few Ultimate and Obliteration Techniques?

Replay only the chapter that missed, on the same difficulty. Do not replay a chapter that already shows MASTER NINJA; whether a worse replay can overwrite a stored rank is not confirmed.

Momiji's and Rachel's alternate costumes unlock at 5 and 10 MASTER NINJA ranks respectively, on any difficulty. These are cosmetic and will unlock naturally during the Mark sets.

Acolyte Chapter Challenge

This is the easiest rank set. Use it to learn where extra enemy waves spawn and how much fighting each chapter expects before you attempt the higher sets. Play chapters 1 to 17 in order.

Mark of the Ninja

Earn MASTER NINJA rank in every Chapter Challenge chapter on Acolyte. The achievement unlocks when the final missing Acolyte chapter receives MASTER NINJA rank.

Warrior Chapter Challenge

Repeat the full chapter set on Warrior. The requirement is independent from Acolyte; a MASTER NINJA rank on another difficulty does not count for this achievement.

Mark of the Warrior

Earn MASTER NINJA rank in every Chapter Challenge chapter on Warrior. It unlocks when the final missing Warrior chapter receives MASTER NINJA rank.

Mentor Chapter Challenge

Repeat the full set on Mentor. Chapter Challenge is usually easier than the equivalent Story difficulty because every chapter starts with maxed gear, but you start each chapter with 0 Essence in an expensive shop. Buy healing items and save them for the hardest section or boss of each chapter. On Chapters 13 and 14, the extra enemies make survival the real problem: on the Chapter 13 staircase, fight from the top platform rather than being surrounded.

Mark of the Mentor

Earn MASTER NINJA rank in every Chapter Challenge chapter on Mentor. It unlocks when the final missing Mentor chapter receives MASTER NINJA rank.

Master Ninja Chapter Challenge

This is the final rank set and requires a Master Ninja Story clear before it can be selected. The same scoring principles apply; the difficulty is surviving while still killing the chapter's enemy population. Because dying is not penalized, a death that reloads a checkpoint costs only time, but make sure the successful pass through each section kills everything. Do not confuse this with the Story clear. Step towards Ninja Mastery and this achievement are separate requirements.

Mark of the Master Ninja

Earn MASTER NINJA rank in every Chapter Challenge chapter on Master Ninja. It unlocks when the final missing Master Ninja chapter receives MASTER NINJA rank.

Tag Missions

Clear All 35 Missions

There are 35 Tag Missions: 10 Path of the Acolyte, 10 Path of the Warrior, 5 Path of the Mentor, 5 Path of the Master Ninja, and 5 Ultimate Ninja. They are single-player in NINJA GAIDEN 2 Black, with the second character controlled by the game. Clearing the Story campaign once unlocks all 35 immediately, so every tier is open by the time this guide reaches them, and no mission blocks another. Mission rank does not matter. The game has no Tag Mission completion tracker, so tick each mission off as you clear it.

How Tag Missions work:

  • Pick your character and the AI partner from Ryu, Momiji, Rachel, and Ayane, with any weapon loadout; the same character can fill both slots. Switch control with D-pad Down whenever the AI matchup is going badly.
  • A downed partner can be revived repeatedly. The mission is lost if the partner's red (lasting) damage fills their whole health bar. Leaving the partner down and soloing is allowed, but you lose their distraction.
  • Team Ninpo: casting Ninpo while both characters hold at least one red Essence triggers a huge explosion that wipes nearby enemies and badly damages most bosses. You start with two uses.
  • Blue and red Essence fly to the character you control, so switch to whoever needs them first. Blue and red Essence instantly complete an Ultimate Technique charge, which is why the AI often spends them on its own UTs.
  • Practice Mode gives infinite life for scouting a mission, but its clears are not established to count, so make every real clear with it off.
  • 10 clears unlock Ryu's Dragon Muscle costume and 20 different clears unlock Ayane's Dead or Alive 5 costume. Both are cosmetic.

The Lunar Staff Izuna Drop is X, Y, X, X, Y. Several strategies below loop it: restart the combo the moment the enemy lands, before it can stand.

Order: clear Acolyte and Warrior first, then Mentor 1–4. Next do the loop and wave missions: Master Ninja 1 and 4, then Ultimate Ninja 4, 5, 3, and 1. Leave the hardest four (Mentor 5, Master Ninja 2, Master Ninja 3, and Ultimate Ninja 2) for last.

HARD AND AI-SENSITIVE: Mentor 5, Master Ninja 2, Master Ninja 3, and Ultimate Ninja 2 depend heavily on AI partner behavior and boss randomness as well as your execution. A failed attempt is not evidence that your strategy is wrong; retry before changing approach.

Double Ryu with the Lunar Staff or Eclipse Scythe handles every Acolyte mission. These first 20 missions are also the best place to make natural progress on Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel's 1,000-kill achievements; use those characters while the mission stays comfortable.

  • Acolyte 3: shoot the archers on the central platform early.
  • Acolyte 5: kill the black dragons with the bow immediately.
  • Acolyte 7: use the central walls as cover from the turrets, and use Ninpo on the large fiends.
  • Acolyte 8: deal with the rocket ninjas on the second floor first.
  • Acolyte 10: the stage is cramped; use Scythe Ultimate Techniques from range.
  • Warrior 6: at half health, sever the dragon's tail, then attack it from behind; flame jets come from its sides.
  • Warrior 9: two Tengu; each Ninpo takes about a fifth of a Tengu's health.
  • Warrior 10: do not use Ninpo on the first two Black Spider Fiends. Spend all of it on the second pair, which takes massive damage; the Lunar Staff stuns them.

Path of the Mentor

Collectibles 5 collectibles
  • No. 1Path of the Mentor 1 — Eliminate all Black Spider Ninja!

  • No. 2Path of the Mentor 2 — Eliminate all Tactical Ninja!

  • No. 3Path of the Mentor 3 — Exterminate the Fiends in the city!

  • No. 4Path of the Mentor 4 — Defeat the fallen Ninja, Genshin!

  • No. 5Path of the Mentor 5 — Defeat the pair of giant Fiends!

Mentor 1–4 are wave missions; Mentor 3 ends with one Godomus and Mentor 4 with the human-form Genshin, who can be looped with the Lunar Staff Izuna Drop.

Mentor 5 is a four-to-five-minute gauntlet of ninjas, spellcasters, Incendiary Claw Ninjas, and flying fireball fiends, followed by two giant Godomus with adds. Your health is the budget for the whole mission.

  • Double Rachel is the most reliable pairing. Machine-gun the opening waves and keep health high. Spend Team Ninpo or the machine gun on the Incendiary Claw Ninjas when they appear.
  • The alternative is Ryu with Blade of the Archfiend plus Rachel. Shoot the flying fiends down with the bow, use the 360-degree Y spin for its invincibility, and save Ninpo for the adds, because it does little to the giants.
  • Against the two Godomus, focus one at a time. Stay near their legs or back and attack only after a committed attack ends, rather than firing blindly from range.

Path of the Master Ninja

Collectibles 5 collectibles
  • No. 1Path of the Master Ninja 1 — Eliminate all Fiends in the Colosseum!

  • No. 2Path of the Master Ninja 2 — Destroy the dragons flying in the canyon!

  • No. 3Path of the Master Ninja 3 — Destroy all Greater Fiends.

  • No. 4Path of the Master Ninja 4 — Defeat 100 Fiends!

  • No. 5Path of the Master Ninja 5 — Exterminate the Fiends of Shadow and Blood!

Master Ninja 1: double Ryu with the Lunar Staff and Blade of the Archfiend. The order is ninja waves, then Genshin, then demon fiends and werewolves, then Gogmagog (the giant skeleton).

  • Ninja waves: use Blade of the Archfiend aerial heavy dives and Ultimate Techniques, and kill rocket ninjas immediately, because each hit takes about half your health.
  • Genshin: loop him with the Lunar Staff Izuna Drop.
  • Werewolves: mash out of their grab, which can kill instantly.
  • Gogmagog: use the Lunar aerial combo or the Blade's 360-degree Y spin.

Master Ninja 2: Ryu with Blade of the Archfiend plus Rachel, or double Rachel. The waves come in this order:

  • Wave 1 is two Rasetsu plus flyers. Use Team Ninpo immediately, kill the lighter-colored Rasetsu first (it has less health), and never fight both at once. Charge a level-2 Blade Ultimate Technique and release it as they close in.
  • Wave 2 is robot fiends. Ninpo is unreliable against them, so chain charged Ultimate Techniques on the group instead, and switch characters to pull the AI away from exploding mechs.
  • After wave 2, a chest refills Ninpo for both characters. Guard first so the AI does not absorb it all, absorb on one character, switch, and absorb on the other. Open wave 3 with Team Ninpo.
  • The Dark Dragon can kill in one hit, so learn its tells: front paws pounding or rearing means a fire pillar is coming, so dash away; a jump means a stomp; flying means fire breath or a dive, so use the 360-degree Y spin or dash out. No position around it is safe, so hit it once or twice after a telegraphed move, re-space, and attack while it targets the AI. Use Team Ninpo or Rachel's Ultimate Technique when the bugs spawn.

Master Ninja 3: the five Greater Fiends in sequence (Alexei, Volf, Zedonius, Elizebet, Fiend Genshin), with only partial health restored between them. Reaching Genshin with low health is the usual failure.

  • Double Ryu with Blade of the Archfiend is the base loadout. Enma's Fang is the better second weapon for Elizebet; the Tonfa is the better one for Fiend Genshin, where its first forward hit staggers him before the forward combo.
  • Alexei and Volf: repeated forward heavy attacks after guarding.
  • Zedonius: dodge sideways from his torso laser and punish from behind.
  • Elizebet: attack only when she is grounded, after her red dash, four-slash combo, or slow tail stab. Land two or three hits, then back off.
  • Fiend Genshin: revive your partner first, because he struggles in a two-on-one. Return to guard between short punishes.
  • Double Rachel, using her Ultimate Technique on Volf and Elizebet, also works.

Master Ninja 4: 100 Fiends. Double Rachel; machine-gun everything. Rachel's hammer Ultimate Technique covers a huge area. Save Team Ninpo for the Golden Winged Van Gelf and werewolf wave and the fiend-dog waves, and never let one Rachel absorb all the red Essence, because both need one for Team Ninpo.

Master Ninja 5: Genshin (the human form) and Elizebet together. Double Ryu with the Lunar Staff plus Enma's Fang or Blade of the Archfiend.

  • Go for Genshin first and draw him away from Elizebet while the partner occupies her. Loop him to death with the Lunar Staff Izuna Drop.
  • Then switch weapons for Elizebet. Either use Enma's Fang dash combos when she is grounded (three hits, then retreat), or use the Blade's 360-degree spin and forward-hold attack after her attacks.
  • Letting the partner die makes the loop easier but raises the risk of instant death.

Ultimate Ninja

  • No. 3Ultimate Ninja 3 — Destroy the rampant evil ninjas!

  • No. 4Ultimate Ninja 4 — Defeat the mysterious Master Ninja!

  • No. 5Ultimate Ninja 5 — Destroy the mysterious Master Ninja!

Ultimate Ninja 1: four Greater Fiends. Double Ryu with Blade of the Archfiend. The partner needs to survive.

  • Kill them one at a time: Volf, Alexei, Zedonius, then Elizebet. Zedonius drops in after Alexei dies.
  • Loop Volf with forward heavy attacks.
  • Punish Alexei after his three-punch combo.
  • Use forward-hold on Zedonius after his attacks, and dash behind him to avoid his torso laser.
  • Hit Elizebet only when she is grounded.

Ultimate Ninja 2: the Black Spider Ninja Clan, a boss gauntlet. Rasetsu comes first, then Red Tengu, then the Fiend Witch, then three Fiend Genshins. There are archers between the waves.

  • Loadouts: Ryu with Blade of the Archfiend plus Rachel, or double Ryu with the Tonfa (its Izuna combo works on Rasetsu), or double Rachel.
  • Team Ninpo: use it at the start of each earlier wave, but do not spend it on the final triple-Fiend-Genshin wave.
  • Rasetsu: guard and counter with heavy or forward heavy attacks. Switch to the AI when grabbed. Obliterate him at about a quarter health. Shoot the archers to advance.
  • Tengu: watch for his bear-hug grab.
  • Fiend Witch: counter her whenever she spreads her arms to spin.
  • Final wave: draw two Genshins away so the partner handles one, then fight one-on-one. To reach a downed partner, dash and guard; do not jump, because Genshin punishes air time with fire or a dive.

Ultimate Ninja 3: Ryu with the Lunar Staff plus Rachel, or double Ryu with the Blade of the Archfiend and Lunar Staff.

  • Ignore the ninja and spellcaster adds.
  • Loop the human-form Genshin with the Lunar Staff Izuna Drop and kill him before the two Rasetsu arrive.
  • Keep both Ninpo for the Rasetsu. The mission ends when both Rasetsu die.
  • Do not treat it as easy; some players needed double Rachel here.

Ultimate Ninja 4: two Ryu-mimic enemies, which deal extreme damage and can kill instantly. Double Ryu with the Lunar Staff: isolate one, catch it in the Izuna Drop, and restart the loop the moment it lands.

Ultimate Ninja 5: five Ryu-mimics, three first and then two, with no orb drops between groups. Use the same double-Lunar loop on one at a time. The second group includes two Scythe-wielding mimics and is the danger point. Do not start a loop until the other clones are far enough away that they cannot interrupt the launch. Ninpo hits several mimics at once when they are near death.

The Power of Two

Clear all 35 Tag Missions. The achievement unlocks when the last uncleared Tag Mission is successfully completed; rank does not matter. If it does not pop after you have ticked all 35, replay any mission you might have cleared with Practice Mode on.

Cumulative Kill Cleanup

Finish Only What the Tracker Still Needs

All four kill achievements are cumulative across Story, Chapter Challenge, and Tag Missions. Check each character's current count on the in-game Ninja Records page. Do the mandatory content first so you never grind kills that would have happened naturally; the grind can also start any time after your first Story clear if you prefer to interleave it.

For Ayane, Momiji, and Rachel, grind in low-tier Tag Missions, which are all open after a Story clear. Use the method under each achievement below. After the first two or three cycles of any loop, check Ninja Records to confirm the count is rising before committing to it. After closing and relaunching the game mid-grind, check Ninja Records again before continuing.

Dragon Ninja

Defeat 1,000 enemies with Hayabusa. This should unlock naturally long before the end of four Story clears plus four Chapter Challenge sets. If it somehow has not, replay an enemy-dense Acolyte Chapter Challenge chapter rather than grinding a fresh Story file.

Kunoichi

Defeat 1,000 enemies with Ayane. Count her Chapter 11 kills and every Ayane Tag Mission kill first. For the remainder, repeat Path of the Acolyte 1 or 2 as Ayane and spam her heavy attack, which delimbs and kills quickly. The achievement unlocks on Ayane's 1,000th counted enemy defeat.

Dragon Shrine Maiden

Defeat 1,000 enemies with Momiji. Count Chapter 5 and Tag Mission kills first. For the remainder, start Path of the Warrior 7 with Momiji as your character (any partner) and use Team Ninpo twice as soon as the mission loads. Then pause, choose Try Again, and repeat. Check Ninja Records after the first few cycles to confirm the restarted kills are counting. Progress from this loop has been reported to possibly reset after a full game shutdown, so before committing to a long farm, fully close and relaunch the game once and confirm in Ninja Records that the count held. Also check the achievement's progress on Xbox alongside Ninja Records. If the restarted kills are not counting, or the count drops after a relaunch, clear Acolyte missions to completion as Momiji instead. If Xbox achievement progress stalls while Ninja Records keeps rising, completing Path of the Acolyte 1 has been reported to restore tracking; this is a community workaround, not a guaranteed fix. It unlocks on Momiji's 1,000th counted defeat.

Fiend Hunter

Defeat 1,000 enemies with Rachel. Count Chapter 8 and Tag Mission kills first. For the remainder, pick any Path of the Acolyte mission with Rachel and any partner. Stand in a corner, aim, and spray the machine gun at the waves until the mission ends, then repeat. It unlocks on Rachel's 1,000th counted defeat.

Final Completion

Roster Check

Before assuming something bugged, verify that all four Story clears, all four Chapter Challenge MASTER NINJA sets, all 35 Tag Missions, all 30 Crystal Skulls, all technique achievements, Chain of 100 Slashes, and all four 1,000-kill counters are complete.

Master of the Secret Arts

Obtained all achievements. This unlocks after the other 37 Xbox achievements have been earned and completes the 1,000G. If it does not appear after your final achievement, fully close and relaunch the game before assuming anything is wrong.
