Before You Start

Quake II (the 2023 enhanced release) has 13 achievements worth 1,000 Gamerscore. It is one shared list across Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the Xbox app on Windows. The old Xbox 360 Quake II bundled with Quake 4 is a separate 0 Gamerscore list and is not covered here.

Every achievement is a story-progress unlock. There are no difficulty, secret, kill-count, speed, or multiplayer achievements, so this is a short, low-pressure completion.

  • Difficulty: none of the achievements care about difficulty. Play everything on Easy.
  • Online and co-op: nothing requires online play or a partner. Play solo.
  • Missables: none. Every achievement can be replayed from Level Select at any time.
  • Playthroughs: one pass through the required units is enough.
  • Unobtainable status: no currently known unobtainable achievements as of October 2026.

How Level Select Works

Level Select is available from a fresh profile under Single Player, with no unlocking required. Pick the campaign (episode), then the entry, then the difficulty. You start with the weapons you would normally have at that point in the story.

For the base Quake II campaign, The Reckoning, Ground Zero, and Quake II 64, the entries are whole units, not individual maps. Selecting a unit starts you on that unit's first map, and you play through to the unit's exit. Call of the Machine is the exception: its Level Select lists individual maps, so you can jump straight to its finale.

That shapes the route:

  • Base Quake II: play Units 1 through 8 and Unit 10. Unit 9 has no achievement and can be skipped.
  • The four other campaigns: play only the final unit or map. Each is one or two maps, ending in a boss fight.

Each achievement unlocks when you finish the relevant unit: walk through the unit's final exit, or for boss finales, kill the boss, finish any remaining objectives, and take the escape route that ends the unit. Don't quit as soon as a boss dies or an objective message appears. Let the unit end and the next unit or the end screen start loading.

Route Tips

  • Use the compass to point at your next objective. You'll find it in the equipment wheel. Base units are hub-based, so you'll pass through some maps more than once, and the compass saves a lot of wandering.
  • Don't rely on autosaves. Quick save often, especially before boss fights and timed sequences.
  • You don't need secrets or full kills. Run past enemies whenever that's quicker and safer.
  • If you're unsure what's left to do, check the Help Computer for your outstanding objectives. If an achievement doesn't register, make sure you actually reached the unit exit and saw the transition. If it still hasn't unlocked, replay that unit from Level Select.

Quake II Base Campaign

Start a New Game in the base campaign on Easy, or pick Unit 1 from Level Select. Playing straight through Units 1 to 8 is the simplest path. Each unit leads into the next automatically.

Unit 1: Base

Establish Communications

Play through the opening unit: the outer base, the installation, and the communications center where you establish the link to the command ship. Then follow the compass back through the installation to the unit exit. The achievement unlocks when you complete the unit.

Unit 2: Warehouse

Destroy Strogg Logistical Train

Work through the warehouse district, completing the train and power objectives the compass points you to. The achievement unlocks when you reach the unit exit.

Unit 3: Jail

Destroy Security Grid

This unit takes you through the jail and detention areas and into the security pyramid. Complete the objectives inside the pyramid, then follow the compass to the unit exit. It's one of the longer base units, so keep moving rather than clearing every room.

Unit 4: Mines

Navigate the Mines

Push through the mine levels to the service entrance into the factory. The achievement unlocks as you complete the unit.

Unit 5: Factory

Shut Down Processing Plant

A short unit. Shut down the processing machinery the compass points you to and take the unit exit.

Unit 6: Power & Cooling

Destroy Strogg Main Reactor

Work through the cooling and power facilities, complete the steps that destroy the main reactor, and leave through the unit exit.

Unit 7: Big Gun

Destroy the Big Gun

A single short map. Fight your way to the Big Gun and hit its destruction switch. This starts a short timed evacuation, so know the route before you press it, and quick save first.

  1. Run back to the circular chamber.
  2. Go through the newly opened doorway to the left of the entrance you originally came in by.
  3. Follow the corridor into the escape cylinder and press the button inside it to finish the unit.

Unit 8: Hangar

Destroy Black Hole Generator

The longest base unit, with several connected maps. Close the main hangar bay door and destroy the Black Hole Generator, following the compass between objectives, then reach the unit exit.

Skip Unit 9: City

When Unit 8 ends, the game moves you into Unit 9 (City). It has no achievement. Open the pause menu, save if you like, and choose End Game. Then go to Single Player, Level Select, the Quake II campaign, and pick Unit 10: Boss.

Unit 10: Boss

Assassinate the Makron

The final unit is a short push to the boss arena, followed by a two-phase fight: Jorg first, then the Makron.

  • Use the pillars for cover and step out to fire between attacks.
  • Save your strongest weapons and any power-ups for the fight. The two floor plates in the arena open ramps to a lower area with extra ammo.
  • Quick save between phases.

Killing the Makron is not the trigger. After the fight, find the escape pod and press the button inside it. The achievement unlocks when the campaign ends.

Expansion and Bonus Campaign Finales

The remaining four achievements each need only the last section of their campaign. Pick each one from Level Select on Easy. Any order works.

The Reckoning: Unit 6: Moon

Destroy the Moon Base

Select The Reckoning, then Unit 6 (Moon). The unit is two maps in total, and the boss fight takes place in the second. Use the compass for each objective and run past most enemies.

  1. Disable the four induction coils.
  2. Defeat the boss. A Quad Damage sits near where the boss spawns, so grab it before the fight.
  3. Shut down the core reactor. Killing the boss does not end the unit.
  4. Return to the cargo bay and step onto the blue-lit pad to finish the unit and unlock the achievement.

Ground Zero: Unit 5: Boss

Anti-Gravity

Select Ground Zero, then Unit 5 (Boss). It's a single map with the Black Widow, which has two phases. The second phase is a mechanical spider form with more aggressive attacks. This is the toughest finale on the list even on Easy, so quick save before the fight and between phases, and use your heaviest weapons. Killing the Black Widow does not end the unit. Once it's down:

  1. Follow the compass to the Gravity Well, disabling the force fields in your way.
  2. Plant the Anti-Matter Bomb at the Gravity Well.
  3. Return to the entrance area and use the transport pod in the right-hand tube to escape and unlock the achievement.

Call of the Machine: Temple of the Creator

Disc Collector

Select Call of the Machine, then the map Temple of the Creator. Despite the description, you don't need the six Data Discs. Starting the finale directly and winning the fight unlocks it.

The fight is four mini-bosses in two pairs, on the upper and lower levels of the same arena.

  1. Cross the sinking platforms near the start and press the switch to open the grate leading toward the arena.
  2. On the upper level, kill the first pair, the two Servitors of Creation. The slime then drains.
  3. Stand on one of the sinking platforms to ride it down to the lower level, where the second pair, the two Masters of the Machine, waits.
  • Two secret power-ups are hidden in wooden planks above the arena. Shoot the planks to drop them.
  • One is a Double Damage above where the first mini-boss spawns, over one of the sinking platforms. Save power-ups for the second pair.

The achievement unlocks when the last mini-boss dies.

Quake II 64: Unit 6: Command Core

Shut Down the Core

Select Quake II 64, then Unit 6 (Command Core). The unit is two maps: a short opening map, then Command Core, where you fight the Guardians (two Tank Commanders and two Hornets).

  • As soon as you arrive in Command Core (the second map), step onto the elevator and immediately backpedal off it to reveal a hole. Drop down for Body Armor and a Power Shield before the boss.
  • Enemy spawns here are aggressive, so stick to Easy.

Destroying all four Guardians removes a blue force field. Go through it and take the lift up to finish the unit. If the game then stops on a prompt to press a button to continue, press it. The achievement may not unlock until you do.
