Before You Start

Transference has 14 achievements worth 1,000 Gamerscore. There is no DLC. The Xbox One list is also the one used on Xbox Series X and S through backward compatibility, and there is no separate list for Series X and S. The Xbox version is played without VR.

  • Online: none. The game is single-player and fully offline.
  • Playthroughs: one if you pick up every collectible as you go. Collectible progress carries over to a New Game, so anything you miss can be picked up on a replay.
  • Story achievements: 11 of the 14 unlock automatically as the story progresses. They cannot be missed.
  • Collectibles: the other three achievements need 13 video logs, every audio log (10 documented, plus one extra radio worth playing), and one photo. Most of them are in rooms that change or close off as the story advances, so they're easy to miss in a single run.
  • Endings and difficulty: there is one ending, no difficulty settings, no choices that affect achievements, and no sprint button.
  • Chapter select: there isn't one.

How Collectibles Work

Video logs (13): tapes, discs, flash drives, and film reels. Each one you pick up appears in the Video Log list in the pause menu. Use that list to check your count before you leave each area.

Audio logs: these play from answering machines, voice recorders, walkie-talkies, and radios. Achievement guides document 10 of them. The game has no tracker for audio logs, so count them yourself. There are two radios, one in Ben's garden shack and one on the living-room floor. It isn't settled whether each one counts separately, so play both. If Broken Family won't unlock, check the shack radio first.

Xbox controls for audio logs: press A to interact with a device. For recorders and walkie-talkies you pick up, hold RT until the recording clearly starts playing. Do this even for ones that seem to start on their own. Missing an RT press is a reported reason for Broken Family not unlocking. Let each log play through. The entrance answering machine and the kitchen recorder each hold more than one log.

The photo: a single picture of Raymond Hayes' undergraduates, hidden in the garage.

Each collectible's window in this guide is the last safe point to collect it in this run. Some items become unreachable once the story moves on, and not every exact cutoff is confirmed, so treat each window as the deadline. Missed items can be picked up after starting a New Game. Progress is reported to carry over: on a replay, video logs you already have don't reappear in the world, and audio logs you've already triggered stay counted. Pick each item up in the window this guide gives, and if one slips, see the cleanup section at the end. The Collectibles section at the very end lists every video log, audio log, and the photo in route order.

Rule of thumb: before using a light switch, placing a crystal, or solving a room's main puzzle, sweep the room you're in. Those actions shift the apartment and can close off what's behind you.

The Apartment

Outside and the Lobby

You start outside the apartment building.

  1. Take the key from the ground next to the backpack and use it on the building door.
  2. Take the sheet music from the C mailbox.
  3. Press the lettered buttons under the mailboxes in the order of the notes: C, D, E. The tune goes on to a G, but there's no G mailbox, and the first part is enough.

Into the Rabbit Hole

Story achievement. It unlocks automatically when the lobby is uncorrupted during this opening sequence.

Basement Door Knocker

The apartment's front door is glitched, and you need the knocker from the basement to fix it. The stairwell light switches change which version of the building you're in.

  1. In the lobby, press the light switch on the left by the door marked B.
  2. Go upstairs and press the glowing light switch before the first door. That door now shows the knocker missing.
  3. Press the same switch again to return to the calmer version of the building.
  4. Go down to the basement. At the bottom, head straight toward the noise and take the knocker from the red door on the left.
  5. Go back up to that same light switch and press it again.
  6. Put the knocker on the glitched door.

Is There Anyone Home?

Story achievement. It unlocks when the apartment entrance door is uncorrupted after you place the knocker.

Music Room Arrival

Collectibles 3 collectibles
  • Music room tape — drawer under the projector, before the first hallway light switch. Menu name: ben 11/21/2011 1:16 pm.

  • Entrance answering machine (first message) — after chasing off the child, before the hallway light switch.

  • Entrance answering machine (second message) — same machine, right after the hallway light switch.

Two collectibles here have to be done before you touch the hallway light switch.

  1. Video log 1: a tape in the drawer under the projector in the music room. Grab it straight away.
  2. Chase the child off. Then play the answering machine by the entrance for audio log 1.
  3. Use the hallway light switch to flip the apartment into its other version.
  4. Play the same answering machine again for audio log 2.

The entrance answering machine picks up new messages as the story goes on. Play it every time this guide sends you past it.

First Crystal

The first (yellow) crystal is on the dining room table. Put it in the first slot of the machine.

After you place it, the story takes you down to the basement. Go through the red door there to get back into the apartment, then head to the kitchen.

Strange Machine

Story achievement. It unlocks when you place the first crystal on the machine.

Kitchen Radio

  1. Press the kitchen light switch to the right of the radio.
  2. Tune the radio to about 96, where the marker lights up and locks, and listen to Ben and his dad.
  3. Press the light switch again.
  4. Tune this version of the radio just to the right of 96. Listen until the lights flicker and the door on the right opens.

The kitchen voice recorder isn't ready yet. It's covered in the next section.

Radio Frequency

Story achievement. It unlocks when the kitchen is uncorrupted after the radio conversation finishes.

Garden Shack and Garage

Collectibles 8 collectibles
  • Garden shack radio — the radio at the back of Ben's shack (crouch to enter); press A. Easy to skip, and a first thing to check if Broken Family is missing.

  • Garden shack disc — above the miniature house's entrance in Ben's shack; turn back toward the doorway to spot it. Menu name: ben 06/18/2011 1:04 pm.

  • Kitchen recorder (first log) — voice recorder by the stove in the blue-lit kitchen, after Radio Frequency and the shack visit; play with RT.

  • Garage locker tape — floor of the garage locker, under the lab coat. Menu name: ray 11/22/2011 8:10 pm.

  • Garage flash drive — on the desk by the garage computer. Menu name: ray 03/27/2011 11:05 pm.

  • Raymond Hayes' undergraduates — inside a folder in the top drawer of the filing cabinet beside the garage computer desk.

  • Kitchen recorder (second log) — same recorder after returning from the garage.

  • Entrance answering machine (third message) — before the dining room laptop puzzle.

The key is in the closet to the left of the fridge, on top of a box. Use it on the outside door. Do everything in this window before you solve the dining room laptop.

  1. Garden shack: crouch (press either thumbstick) to get inside Ben's shack. Press A on the radio at the back and let it play. It's easy to skip, and it's one of the first things to check if Broken Family is missing. Then turn back toward the doorway: video log 2 is a disc sitting above the miniature house's entrance.
  2. Kitchen recorder, first log: back in the kitchen, press the light switch. The voice recorder by the stove is now in the blue-lit kitchen. Pick it up and hold RT until the recording clearly starts. It holds a second log, so come back to it after the garage.
  3. Garage: take video log 3, a tape on the floor of the locker under the lab coat, and video log 4, a flash drive on the desk by the computer. Press the blue button on the computer and let the video play. This powers the blue cables leading out of the garage. For the photo, open the top drawer of the filing cabinet beside the computer desk and search the folders inside.
  4. Back in the kitchen, use the voice recorder again for its second audio log.
  5. Play the entrance answering machine for its next message.

Before you solve the laptop, the Video Log menu should show 4 logs.

Behind the Curtain

The achievement asks you to find the picture of Raymond Hayes' undergraduates, and it unlocks when you pick that photo up from the garage filing cabinet. It's the only photo collectible in the game. Take it before leaving the garage. If you miss it, you'll have to pick it up on a replay.

Dining Room Laptop

Four floating scraps of paper in the dining room make up the laptop passcode: 2476. Make sure every step in the shack and garage section is done first, then enter the code.

Snowflake

Story achievement. It unlocks when the dining room is uncorrupted after you enter the laptop passcode.

Ben's Room

Collectibles 3 collectibles
  • Dining room flash drive — top shelf of the cabinet below the 3D printer, after the laptop puzzle. Menu name: ray 10/27/2011 1:36 am.

  • Ben's walkie-talkie — on Ben's desk, before taking the green crystal.

  • Ben's closet disc — next to a shoe in Ben's closet, before taking the green crystal. Menu name: ben 03/12/2011 11:48 am.

Video log 5: right after the laptop puzzle, check the dining room cabinet below the 3D printer. The flash drive is on its top shelf. Pick it up before you place the last letter on Ben's door.

Ben's door takes a magnet-letter password: LAIKA, the dog's name from the doghouse.

  • L and the first A are on the fridge.
  • I is on the floor outside Ben's door.
  • The second A is on the floor outside the front door.
  • K: use the 3D printer to print the K and take it. Then press the kitchen light switch, and the K can go in the fourth blank.

Inside Ben's room, do these before you take the crystal:

  1. Play the walkie-talkie on Ben's desk for an audio log.
  2. Pick up video log 6, a disc next to a shoe in the closet.
  3. Take the green crystal from the jittery drawer.

Press the white light switch in the hallway, then place the crystal in the machine's middle slot.

Synchronized Benjamin

Story achievement. It unlocks when you place the second crystal on the machine.

Piano Puzzle

Collectibles 1 collectible
  • Closet film reel — after the green crystal and the basement visit, reopen the red door behind you, which has become a closet; before the piano. Menu name: Katherine sonsong.

  1. Video log 7: placing the green crystal sends you down to the basement again. Watch the videos there, then go through the red door. Once the door shuts behind you, turn around and open it. It's now a closet with a film reel inside. Take it before you start the piano.
  2. Take the light bulb from the right-hand cabinet below the 3D printer in the dining room and fit it on the piano.
  3. Press the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th keys so that all six lights come on. If a combination goes wrong, the lights reset after four presses.

Maestro

Story achievement. It unlocks when the music room is uncorrupted after you finish the piano lights.

Living Room and Parents' Bedroom

Collectibles 9 collectibles
  • Living room lamp shelf — low shelf under the left-hand lamp, before following the woman. Menu name: Katherine strings.

  • Living room filing cabinet — top drawer of the nearest filing cabinet, before following the woman. Menu name: Katherine 11/21/2011 1:16 pm.

  • Living room back-left table — after the bathroom, once the room has flipped. Menu name: ben 11/11/2011 8:27 pm.

  • Living room radio — on the floor by the fireplace, after the bathroom. Play it even if the shack radio already played.

  • Living room desk recorder — right side of the desk, before setting the clock to 8:56.

  • Fireplace mantel — after setting the clock to 8:56. Menu name: ray 11/21/2011 1:16 pm.

  • Behind the TV — on the floor behind the TV, after the clock puzzle. Menu name: ray 11/15/2011 2:20 am.

  • Binder walkie-talkie — by the stack of binders in the living room, after the clock puzzle.

  • Answering machine outside the living room — after the clock puzzle; the last audio log.

The living room holds most of the remaining collectibles. Everything listed here must be collected before you take the third crystal.

Before following the woman:

  • Video log 8: the low shelf under the left-hand lamp.
  • Video log 9: the top drawer of the nearest filing cabinet.

Bedroom and bathroom:

  1. Follow the woman into the parents' bedroom. Use the alarm clock there to switch the bedroom into its altered, upside-down version.
  2. In that version, open the bottom drawer of the corner filing cabinet and press the switch inside. This takes you to the bathroom.
  3. Leave the bathroom, flip the kitchen light switch, and go back to the living room.

Back in the living room:

  • Video log 10: on the back-left table once the room has flipped.
  • Audio log: play the radio on the floor by the fireplace.

Hourglass and clock:

  1. Get the bottle of sand from Ben's desk, then flip the kitchen light switch again.
  2. Hourglass: add the sand, flip the hourglass, and reach the corner of the desk before the room shifts back. Leave the strange clock alone.
  3. Before you set the analog clock, use the voice recorder on the right side of the desk for an audio log.
  4. Set the analog clock to 8:56. If 8:56 doesn't register, try a minute or two later (8:57 to 8:58 are also reported).

After the clock, before taking the crystal:

  • Video log 11: on the fireplace mantel.
  • Video log 12: on the floor behind the TV.
  • Audio log: the walkie-talkie by the stack of binders.
  • Audio log: the answering machine just outside the living room. This is the last audio log.

Your Video Log menu should now show 12 logs.

Time is Relative

Story achievement. It unlocks when the living room is uncorrupted, which happens as you work through this sequence.

Broken Family

You need every audio log for this one. On this route, the last log is the answering machine outside the living room, so that's where Broken Family should unlock. If it doesn't, start by checking two known problem spots: the shack radio, and any held recorder or walkie-talkie that never got its RT press. Unlocks have also failed after full replays, so a miss isn't always the cause. Before taking the third crystal, replay every device you can still reach.

CURRENTLY COMMUNITY-FLAGGED / BUGGY (reports through September 2026): Broken Family sometimes fails to unlock even after every log has been played. The cleanup section covers recovery.

Third Crystal and the Dark Room

Collectibles 1 collectible
  • Dark room — on the floor to the left in the dark room after the third crystal, shown only by faint sparkles; before the red door. Menu name: ray 11/22/2011 6:45 pm.

The red crystal is in the former music room, where you'll see it jiggling. Pick it up, flip the white light switch in the hallway near Ben's room and the bathroom, then place the crystal in the dining room machine.

Synchronized Raymond

Story achievement. It unlocks when you place the third crystal on the machine.

The Whole Story

Video log 13 is in the dark room you reach right after the third crystal. It's on the floor to the left, near the wires and the red door, and shows only as faint sparkles. Don't leave this room or go through the red door until you have it. The achievement unlocks when you pick up the 13th video log. If it doesn't, open the Video Log menu to see which one is missing. This achievement is currently community-flagged for sometimes failing to unlock even at 13 of 13; see the cleanup section.

Final Crystal

Go through the red door. Leave the apartment by the front door, go down the looping stairs, and come back into the apartment. Then go to the parents' bedroom. Wind the music box all the way to the right and let the song play. The fourth crystal comes out of it.

When the front door flies open, survive the white hallway sequence and place the crystal at the far end of the hall.

Face Your Fears

Story achievement. It unlocks when you face the monster with the fourth crystal in place.

The Red Door

Walk through the final red door and let the closing video play.

"Deus ex machina"

Story achievement. It unlocks when you reach the end of the game, as the final video starts.

Cleanup

Missed Collectibles

There's no chapter select. To recover a missed video log, audio log, or the photo, start a New Game. The story resets, but collectible progress carries over. A focused replay that skips straight past story beats takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes.

  • Video logs: check the pause-menu Video Log list for gaps first. Logs you already have don't appear again, so only the missing ones are in the world on the replay. If the missing menu name belongs to one of the uncertain pairs in the Collectibles section (living-room logs 8 and 9, or 11 and 12), check both locations in that pair.
  • Audio logs: there's no tracker, so use every device on the route again, especially the shack radio (A) and the held recorders and walkie-talkies (RT). Broken Family unlocks as soon as the last missing log is triggered.
  • The photo: it's in the garage filing cabinet again on the replay.

If an achievement didn't unlock after its requirement was met:

Broken Family is the one most often reported.

CURRENTLY COMMUNITY-FLAGGED / BUGGY: The Whole Story. One report from July 2026 describes it unlocking only on a second playthrough after the full 13 were collected. This isn't a universal bug, and there's no guaranteed fix.
HISTORICALLY REPORTED BUG: Face Your Fears, Time is Relative, and "Deus ex machina" have isolated reports of failing to unlock or unlocking late. None of these points to a consistent defect.

None of the fixes below is guaranteed. Try them in this order:

  1. Check the achievement in the Xbox achievements list after a short wait. Unlocks have been reported arriving late.
  2. Fully quit the game and relaunch it.
  3. For "Deus ex machina", try Continue from the main menu first. It has been reported to put you back at the music-box sequence, so you can replay the ending without a new game. This workaround isn't guaranteed.
  4. Start a New Game and replay to the trigger. For Broken Family, use every audio device again with A, and hold RT on held devices. For a story achievement, play to that story moment again.
  5. Last resort: go to Manage game and add-ons > Saved data, choose your profile's own save file (not just Delete all), and select Delete everywhere, then replay the route. This has helped some players and failed for others. It also wipes your collectible progress.

Video Logs

13 in the game

The Whole Story needs all 13. The pause-menu Video Log list names each file by person and timestamp, not by location. The menu name shown with each entry below is matched by pickup order. The garage flash drive's name is confirmed. The locker tape's name is the remaining garage entry. Entries 8 and 9, and 11 and 12, are found close together, and sources disagree on which name goes with which, so the names within those pairs could be swapped.

Audio Logs

11 listed

Broken Family needs every audio log. Achievement guides document 10. This list has 11 entries because it includes both radios, and it isn't settled whether they count separately. Play every entry. The game has no audio log tracker. Press A to interact. For held recorders and walkie-talkies, hold RT until the recording clearly starts, then let each log finish.
